Mirage Blog Tour & Giveaway

Hi everyone! Today we have the pleasure of hosting the Mirage Blog Tour. We have asked Violet McKenna to join us for a Q & A. What’s really awesome about her answers is that she, via the awesome Kristi Cook, is answering them using quotes from Mirage. It’s going to be pretty awesome. So without further ado, let’s get started.

Two Chicks: Hello, Violet! Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and your “abilities”?

Violet: “Visions. Generally bad stuff, and almost exclusively about people I’m close to.”

Two Chicks: If you could have any ability other than your own, what would it be?

Violet: “Not regular Cece. Astral Cece,” I explained. “You know, out for a virtual stroll.”

Seventeen-year-old Violet McKenna is back for her senior year at Winterhaven, and thrilled to be with Aidan after a long summer apart. But when a violent and disturbing vision begins to haunt her, Violet suddenly feels unsure of everything: who to trust, if she is in danger, and—worst of all—whether she and Aidan are really meant to be together.
Two Chicks: Now that you know what Aidan’s, um, condition is, how are you handling things?

Violet: I was a little bit scared, and I didn’t want him to know it. It was something I’d never get used to, his transformation. Still, I’d wanted him to bite me. I’d asked him to bite me. He’d refused, of course, but what if he hadn’t? What if he wasn’t always stronger than me?

Two Chicks: What do you REALLY think of the new guy, Tyler?

Violet: “Tyler Bennett, from Texas. Overconfident and very competitive. Oh, and he said he was telekinetic. Micro, actually.” I might have been in love with someone else, but I wasn’t blind. He was cute.

Two Chicks: What’s up with the new teacher, Dr. Byrne? Any thoughts on him?

Violet: He had that ‘just rolled out of bed’ look, like he’d forgotten to shave or brush his hair. Even so, he looked like he belonged on the cover of one of those outdoorsy catalogs, the ones that sold everything from cargo pants to canoes.

Two Chicks: Anything else you’d like us to know about you?

Violet: I’d never thought too much about friendship before I came to Winterhaven, mostly because I hadn’t had many friends. Not because I didn’t want to, but because I couldn’t. The more people I got close to, the more people I saw in my visions, which were harbingers of awful things to come. Besides, the more friends I had, the more people I had to hide my secret from, to pretend that I didn’t know about things before they happened. But now…now I had friends. Friends I didn’t have to pretend with.

And here’s the excerpt!
Olivia reached up, feeling the tender spots on her head. Her fingers brushed across a row of—were those little ridges made of metal?
“Careful. The staples are almost ready to come out, but it’s still going to be sore for a while.”
Staples?!Her stomach rolled. I have staples in my head? She lowered her now-shaking hand. “Can I get a mirror?”
Mom looked at Dad, then back at her. “I don’t think that’s a good idea. Not until you’ve healed a little more.”
Mom patted Olivia’s leg. “You just relax. We’ll be back in a few minutes.”
The two of them left the room, but when Mom swung the door closed, it didn’t latch. Olivia could hear their voices in the hall.
“I still think we should…” She couldn’t make out the rest of Dad’s muffled words. “…know if I can do this.”
“…late for that,” Mom said. “We’d lose everything, including…” Her voice faded as they got farther away. “…have to move.”
Olivia could tell the conversation was tense, but the words were impossible to decipher now. Holding a hand in front of her face, she turned it back and forth. A plastic tube ran from her arm to a machine next to her bed. She peeked into her nightgown and stared in horror at the long red stripe running down her chest.
            Sick.
You’re alive. You shouldn’t be thinking about looks.

Lowering her hand, she scanned the room. I wonder how my face looks. From the way Dad stared at me, plus the fact Mom won’t let me see a mirror, it must be bad.
Brains are more important than looks.
            That’s what ugly people say.
Olivia put her hands on her head and squeezed. “Stop it,” she whispered to her arguing thoughts, hysteria bubbling up and squeezing the air from her lungs. What was happening to her? Why didn’t she recognize her parents or know where she was? Who she was? Tears ran warm trails down her cheeks. “Just make it all stop.”

Jaime's Review of Before I Wake by Rachel Vincent

Before I Wake
Rachel Vincent
Paperback: 352 Pages
Release Date: June 26, 2012
Publisher: Harlequin Teen
ISBN: 0373210612

From Goodreads.

I died on a Thursday-killed by a monster intent on stealing my soul. The good news? He didn't get it. The bad news? Turns out not even death will get you out of high school... Covering up her own murder was one thing, but faking life is much harder than Kaylee Cavanaugh expected. After weeks spent "recovering," she's back in school, fighting to stay visible to the human world, struggling to fit in with her friends and planning time alone with her new reaper boyfriend. But to earn her keep in the human world, Kaylee must reclaim stolen souls, and when her first assignment brings her face-to-face with an old foe, she knows the game has changed. Her immortal status won't keep her safe. And this time Kaylee isn't just gambling with her own life....

I have so many feelings about this book! I loved If I Die and I didn’t think that Rachel could top it, no way no how! I mean the thing that I had been waiting for forever finally happened in If I Die no not Kaylee dying but, if you’ve read If I Die you’ll know what I’m talking about ;)

Before I Wake made my heart soar at one moment then ripped it out and tore it to shreds the next.
There’s one scene in this book where I lost it. I mean literally lost it! Ugly red eyes, tears, runny nose the works; and no I won’t tell you which scene but it devastated me. There were also a few scenes where I swooned so much I felt like I needed a cold shower and yeah… sorry Team Nash peeps those were between Tod and Kay. Also I already really liked Sabine in If I Die but I came to adore her in this one she had some of the best one liner’s and had me cracking up! I mean she actually says at one point about Sophie…. “Yeah and hissing kittens think they’re badass, too.” It’s so fitting! I also loved Kaylee’s dad in this one he’s trying so hard to make sure his daughter still has a “normal” life and he’s even trying to have an “open door” policy when it comes to Tod and Kaylee and a curfew lol it’s so cute! Oh and Nash isn't as much of an asshat in this one so Nash fans that should make you happy!

I don’t want to talk much about the story as I feel I will go into spoilery territory but holy crap! There’s things that I never saw coming not in a million years and Rachel definitely ups the WTF’ery in this one. I definitely used a lot of curse words while reading this one! I can’t wait to see how this story all ends in With All My Soul the final Soul Screamers book! But man am I going to be sad to see this series I love so much come to an end!

I had a really hard time finding a passage for this one that wasn’t too spoilery and I also had to choose from about 20 pages that I had post-it notes on. I didn’t want to share any of the swoon worthy scenes I figured y’all would love to wait and read them on their own….. So I think I finally found one that is awesome though! It’s between Kaylee and her dad.

I pushed the open the door to find him sitting on the edge of his bed in a pair of flannel pajama pants, squinting at the alarm clock on his bedside table. “Guess what? I made breakfast.”

“You made…?” But before he could finish that thought, our ancient water heater groaned to life and the sound of running water erupted form down the hall. My dad’s eyes widened as he glanced at the closed bathroom door over my shoulder. “Who’s in the shower?”

“Nash. We kind of… had an impromptu sleepover.”

“You and Nash?” My dad was out of bed in an instant, reaching for the robe tossed over his footboard.

“No! Well yes. But, Sabine stayed the night, too.”

“That doesn’t sound much better, Kay…”

“Hang on, Pa, don’t reach for yer shotgun just yet,” I said, grinning over the protective streak I found funny, when there wasn’t actually anything to shelter me from. “We were just circlin’ the wagons, not having an orgy.”

My dad suddenly looked like he might be sick. “Please don’t ever say that word again.”

“Wagons?” I teased, and he actually cracked a smile.

“Yes, you’re much too young to be using Wild West analogies,” He tied his robe and ran one hand through his hair that showed no sign of thinning, well into his one hundred and thirty-second year. “So what happened? Why are we circling the proverbial wagons?”

If you haven’t pre-ordered this one yet I highly suggest it! You’ll want to read it ASAP!

Jaime's Review of Fated by Alyson Noel

From Goodreads.

The first book in a magnificent new series about a girl who can navigate between the worlds of the living and the dead by #1 New York Times bestselling author Alyson Noël. Lately strange things have been happening to Daire Santos. Animals follow her, crows mock her, and glowing people appear out of nowhere. Worried that Daire is having a nervous breakdown, her mother packs her off to stay in the dusty plains of Enchantment, New Mexico with a grandmother she’s never met. There she crosses paths with Dace, a gorgeous guy with unearthly blue eyes who she’s encountered before...but only in her dreams. And she’ll get to know her grandmother—a woman who recognizes Daire’s bizarre episodes for what they are. A call to her true destiny as a Soul Seeker, one who can navigate between the worlds of the living and the dead. Her grandmother immediately begins teaching her to harness her powers—but it’s an art that must be mastered quickly. Because Dace’s brother is an evil shape-shifter who’s out to steal her powers. Now Daire must embrace her fate as a Soul Seeker and find out if Dace is one guy she’s meant to be with...or if he’s allied with the enemy she’s destined to destroy.

I really liked this book! Way more than I thought I would especially after getting aggravated with Alyson’s Immortals series. So if you did too (got aggravated that is) give Fated a chance because the writing is beautiful and the story is absolutely magical!

One of the things I loved about this story was Daire she was a very strong female MC and really likable. I didn’t find her whiny or needy at all. And I loved her two friends Xoitchl and Auden along with the eventual love interest Dace. Yeah there’s a bit of inst-love in this but Daire fights it because the love was only in her dreams even though she feels it when she’s awake too. There’s also an evil twin to Dace his name is Cade; and he’s arrogant, gorgeous, and absolutely demented but I kinda like him! Yeah I know, I know predictable right Jaime always likes the bad guy but in this story I like Dace more.

Oh and speaking of the magick part of the story I loved the Native American mythology Alyson brought into the story it’s so well researched and detailed and it made the story even more enjoyable to read! I can’t wait for book two in the series Echo!!!!!

I chose a rather steamy passage to share but I just couldn’t resist!

He throws his head back and laughs, the sight so beautiful I wish could last. Leveling his gaze on me when he says, “I guess we’re right back to instincts again—so far, they’ve yet to steer me wrong.”

“And what are your instincts telling you now?” I whisper, knowing I can no longer trust mine. He’s thrown me so off kilter, I don’t know what to expect, what to do next, other than tighten my grip on the rock in my lap, and wait for his twin to show up.

He swallows hard. Takes a deep breath as though he’s about to dip under the water again, but he says, “They’re telling me to kiss you.”

He leans forward, gaze steeped with intent. And when his hands find my cheeks—when his thumbs smooth my skin—when his gaze wanders over me, devouring all that he sees—well, I can’t help but notice that it’s happening now just like it did in the dream.

Jaime's Review of Endlessly By Kiersten White

Kiersten White
Hardcover: 400 Pages

Publisher: Harper Teen
ISBN: 0061985881

From Goodreads.

Try as she might, Evie can’t seem to escape her not-so-normal past. And what was supposed to be a blissfully normal school break is ruined when a massive group of paranormals shows up at her house, claiming that Evie is the only one who can protect them from a mysterious, perilous fate. The deadly war between the faerie courts looms ever closer. The clock is ticking on the entire paranormal world. And its future rests solely in Evie’s hands. So much for normal. With a perfect blend of humor and suspense, Endlessly is everything readers could dream of in a conclusion—and the unexpected twists will keep them guessing until the very last page.

One thing I absolutely love about Kiersten White’s books is that she tells a good story and that story has humor. I mean laugh out loud humor! Thanks Kiersten for that and for writing a series that I really liked and was sad to see end! Her books aren’t overly gloomy, heart wrenching, or angsty so if you’re looking to be tortured you won’t be… or at least I wasn’t. That being said there were some scenes that did make me a little angry and those included Reth. I love that fairy and it was hard to see some of the things that happen to him in this book.

Team Evie and Lend fans will be very happy with the ending to this series. It wraps up nicely but not without issues. Endlessly throws a few twists in the way like the end of the paranormals, a new IPCA boss, the impending war between the fae, and a curse.  Oh and Jack’s back which was awesome because I loved him!

I was really happy with the ending but a little sad also, it was bittersweet. I really think fans of this series will enjoy it!

I picked a scene that made me snort I was laughing so hard!

“Have you been reading his diary?” I asked. “Because I’ll bet he got really creative with the violence ideas.”

“No, I only ever read yours. But let me tell you, one more exclamation mark dotted with a heart while talking about how good a kisser Lend is and I was about ready to do myself in. You’re rather single-minded when it comes to adoring him.”

“True dat,” Arianna said, nodding.

“How come you can use ’true dat’ if I can’t?” I asked, rightfully outraged.

“Because I am dead, and none of the rules apply anymore.”

Lend ate his omlet, refusing to answer Jack’s questions about just how it was on a scale from cutting off limbs to just breaking his nose. I gave Jack full points for flavor but noted the texture was slightly off, exempting him from name-calling but not from dirty looks.

Arianna lounged against the counter, and when I finished first we debated the usage of “dude,” “true dat,” and my favorite, “for serious.”

“I kind of wish they’d shut up,” Jack said.

“Dude, true dat,” Lend answered.

Jack nodded solemnly. “For serious.”

Jaime's Review of Something Strange and Deadly by Susan Dennard

From Goodreads.

The year is 1876, and there’s something strange and deadly loose in Philadelphia… Eleanor Fitt has a lot to worry about. Her brother has gone missing, her family has fallen on hard times, and her mother is determined to marry her off to any rich young man who walks by. But this is nothing compared to what she’s just read in the newspaper— The Dead are rising in Philadelphia. And then, in a frightening attack, a zombie delivers a letter to Eleanor…from her brother. Whoever is controlling the Dead army has taken her brother as well. If Eleanor is going to find him, she’ll have to venture into the lab of the notorious Spirit-Hunters, who protect the city from supernatural forces. But as Eleanor spends more time with the Spirit-Hunters, including their maddeningly stubborn yet handsome inventor, Daniel, the situation becomes dire. And now, not only is her reputation on the line, but her very life may hang in the balance.

Holy crap I loved this book! I mean really, really loved it! I read it in a day and a half. I would have read it straight through if I hadn’t started it so late. Susan Dennard has created a world in historical Philadelphia where zombies walk the streets Necromancer’s lurk behind the scenes, and a girl bred from high upbringings longs for a life of adventure and a little bit of danger. This story has it all romance, mystery, danger, comedy, and gorgeous boys! Seriously y’all when this one hits the bookstores go and get it!!

I absolutely loved Eleanor she was an amazing MC! She didn’t put up with anyone’s lip well except for her mother who was a royal pain. She was willing do anything to find her missing brother Elijah even if it means going to someone below her class like the Shadow Hunters. I fell in love with Daniel one of the hunters almost immediately! I loved his quick wit and sharp tongue but most of all I loved his immense protectiveness over Eleanor even if she did fight him every step of the way. I also loved Jie she was quite a character a Chinese girl dressing as a boy who could kick some major ass.

I loved how the story bounced back and forth between Eleanor’s time with the Shadow Hunters and then her time with the people society or her mother deemed appropriate. You could always tell she never wanted to be with those people and that she had the heart of a Shadow Hunter and a scholar. I will admit there were a few things that I did  figure out early but that didn’t stop me from reading I was so involved in this story and this world that I didn’t want it to end! I am already dying for book 2!!! So again I loved this book and I will be telling everyone I know that they must read it!!!!

Before my passage I wanted to share a little bit that made me literally snort I was laughing so hard. Susan during some research found this absolutely ludicrous position that ladies during that time period stood in it’s called a Grecian Bend. I’ll post a picture below ;)

Mama wanted me to remember my Grecian bend. It was the most popular stance for ladies these days: bottom thrust back and high, chest pushed forward and low. Supposedly, it was an enticing pose to the modern man. I couldn’t imagine why since it made us look like a camel who expected at any moment to be ridden by our masters.

I’ve chosen a passage between Eleanor and Daniel because the two of them made me laugh and
swoon J

“Varmint!” I spat out the first word I could find and prayed he couldn't see my scarlet flush. “You rude low-class varmint! Don’t you ever touch me again.”

He gripped his elbow to his stomach, massaging the joint and muttering under his breath.

“What’s that?” I demanded. “What are you grumbling about?”

His lips curved into a frown. “I said I ain’t a varmint, and I ain’t gonna hurt you.”

“Aw,” I simpered, pouting my lower lip dramatically and trying to hide my own discomfort. “Did I hurt your feelings? Well, you shouldn’t take it personally, Mr. Sheridan. No one cares about my opinion.”

Daniel’s frown vanished, and the angles of his jaw eased into a gentle sadness. “Maybe I care.”

His words astounded me, and a strange flutter whirled through my chest. Had he just complimented me?

For several moments I was too flustered to speak, and the air was thick with our silence---as if the words I wanted to say were there, but invisible. Daniel shifted his weight, his eyes still on mine.

At last he flashed a grin, and the strange moment passed. He gave a mocking bow, but he was too near me to go far. When he lifted his head back up, his face was somber once more.

Oh and here’s the Grecian Bend picture as promised don’t laugh too hard ;)

Fierce Reads Interview and Signed books Giveaway!

Hey all! We had the most awesome opportunity Friday night at the Fierce Reads signing at Keplers! Macmillan asked us to be the bloggers for the event and of course we said yes. So not only did we get to go to an awesome signing (which Macmillan gave us finished copies to have signed and give away, fill out the rafflecopter form below), meet some awesome authors, and grab some killer swag. We got to interview them! These ladies were awesome! They made us laugh till our bellies hurt and they are all just super nice and really smart people!  Due to time constraints and other issue such as bay area traffic and two signings in one day we didn’t get to ask all of the questions we wanted to but we got a good amount of them answered.

So without further ado meet Jennifer Bosworth, Anna Banks, Leigh Bardugo, Emmy Laybourne, and Marissa Meyer!

Jennifer Bosworth Struck- (Quite possibly the most demented hot chick we’ve met btw lol)

Two Chicks- Since Struck is a standalone (for now hint hint Macmillan) what are you currently writing?

Jenn- I’m writing two standalones. One is called The Hive it’s a cross between The Ring(Movie) and Big Love (TV Show). The other is called The Knife Sharpeners Daughter it’s a post-apocalyptic, fantasy, western…… Definitely not crap ;)

Ok we’re soooooo freaking excited to read The Knife Sharpeners Daughter!!!!!!! Jenn if you need beta readers we’d be happy to oblige lol ;)

Two Chicks- Who has been your favorite character to write?

Jenn- "the villan (Prophet) because I empathize with the monster"

Anna Banks Of Poseidon- (Funny, sweet, mentioned something about taking showers in her bra, and after talking to her we didn’t hear a southern accent… much lol)

Two Chicks- When is the sequel (yes there is one) to Of Poseidon going to be released?

Anna- About this same time next near.

Two Chicks- Toraf is hilarious! Who do you see playing him if Of Poseidon was going to be made into a movie?

Anna- I can’t remember his name but he’s Jason O’Mara’s daughters’ boyfriend on Terra Nova.

*** We has a pic!***
Hottie right?!?!

Two Chicks- Who has been your favorite character to write?

Anna- Toraf because he was good natured, long suffering and...dumb.

Leigh Bardugo Shadow and Bone- (Lover of Labyrinth, cries easily, Team Finnick… Jaime thinks they may be twins separated at birth JK lol ;)

Two Chicks- Who do you picture when you’re thinking of Darkling?

Ok so here she mentions David Bowie from Labyrinth and Jaime looses the rest dreaming of Jareth lol but, then she mentions author Jenn Rush and her tumblr page and Jaime’s ears perk back up.

Leigh- Jenn found this model Sean O’Pry he is darkling!!!
Unf nuff said!

Two Chicks- Any hints for book 2?

Leigh- There’s a title it’s Siege and Storm (releasing 2013)

Two Chicks- Who has been your favorite character to write?

Leigh- Sturmhound a privateer who shows up in book 2.

Marissa Meyer Cinder- (Sailor Moon Fan, has crazy dreams that turn into awesome stories, and is hilarious!)

Two Chicks- How much of Cinder and Kai will be in Scarlet?

Marissa- Cinder will be in all of the books. There won’t be much Kai in Scarlet he’s in maybe 3 chapters but, he’s in book 3 Cress more.

Two Chicks- Can you tell us more about Wolf (he’s in Scarlet) he sounds intriguing?

Marissa- He’s sexy… a street fighter with a dark and mysterious past. That’s all I can say for now.

Two Chicks- Who has been your favorite character to write?

Marissa- Captain Carswell Thorne in book 2 because he's a sexy scoundrel.

Emmy Laybourne Monument 14- (Totally laid back, really funny, and OMG she was in Superstar!!!!!)
Yep that's Emmy next to Molly Shannon!
Two Chicks-Hints for book 2?

Emmy- It’s really scary. So scary that I actually wrote it really fast lol.

Two Chicks- Who has been your favorite character to write?

Emmy- Max because he was just right in my brain. He would make me laugh.
