Hey y’all! Ok I am super excited for today’s post! First of all I adore Wendy Higgins and her books! I was so crazy about Sweet Evil I made everyone I knew read it! I was stoked when we got the opportunity to host the blog tour for Sweet Peril this book rocked as much as book 1 and had some seriously steamy scenes!!!!

Ok so here’s my post it’s a music post with videos!

Anna, what are your three favorite songs?

“Young Volcanoes” by Fall Out Boy - I love the line about the foxes hunting the hounds because that’s my life right now, trying to get the Nephilim to rise up and fight the Dukes. It’s a turn of the table, but we’re like Young Volcanoes. We’re wild, and when it comes down to it, we plan to explode.

“Your Hands” by JJ Heller - This song is so sweet and the singer’s voice is beautiful. It reminds me of the day I stood at the ledge of LookOut Point and raised my hands to the sky. My favorite lines are “When my world is shaking, Heaven stands. When my heart is breaking, I never leave Your hands.”

“I Knew You Were Trouble” by Taylor Swift - I mean, come on guys! This is SO Kaidan, Rowe, right? Sometimes when I hear this song I think back to our early days and I get those crazy, wild butterflies again. He was, and is, trouble. And I knew it, but I still fell hard.

Kaidan, what three songs do you use to decompress?

“Radioactive” by Imagine Dragons, “Sail” by Awolnation, and “Madness” by Muse. Bloody brilliant, those ones. The key is volume: the rattle-your-ears kind of high volume with loads of bass. If you’ve had a shit day, give it a go, luvs. You can thank me later. *winks* Jaime just has to add that these are some of her favorite songs right now! Kaidan has awesome taste!

And someone tweeted Kaidan this song and it's SO perfect!!! Se we thought we should add it! Jaime loves this band too!

“What’s your rank, baby blue eyes?” the guy asks, pushing off his cot and stalking toward the prince. Everything in me screams to act, but I don’t want to declare alliances this early on. Not without understanding the dynamic of placements and bonds already formed among these people. But I’ll not let this hulk of a man harm the prince. I brace my heel against the wall, ready to push off and lunge. Prince Caben rises to his feet, slowly turning to face him. He straightens his spine, squaring his shoulders. “I don’t have one. And my name is Payne. Not ‘baby blue eyes’, meathead.” Big guy laughs, his husky voice bounces off the rock walls. “I’m Crew”—he beats his chest hard once, like a barbarian—“and I’ve won three fights. I’ll win the next two and be the one awarded the freedom ring.” He leans down toward Prince Caben, leveling their faces. “So don’t even think about you or your princess over there walking out of here. I’m ranked as a Colossal. The strongest Colossal in Bax’s league.” Princess? I nearly scoff. Then I realize what the problem with Crew is: he feels threatened by Prince Caben. That revelation almost makes me laugh out right. What does a big stack of muscles like Crew have to fear from the prince? Which by the looks of you, will happen in your first match.” Prince Caben nods, as if he’s simply piecing together a jigsaw puzzle and not being told of his demise. “What is the cuff for?” He points to the iron clamp around Crew’s wrist. “It’s our biometric monitor.” Crew shoves the cuff up close to the prince’s face. “See those three blue lights? Those are my wins. When the fifth lights up, I’m outta’ here.” “Has anyone ever won the freedom ring before?” Prince Caben asks. Crew’s massive arms tremble. “No,” he grinds out. “But I will.” He cocks his cuffed hand back, then sends a blow to Prince Caben’s chin. Hell. I’m up and racing across the cell before the prince hits the ground. Crew spots me from his peripheral. He turns and swipes the air. I duck, roll, and come up behind him. I jump on the cot and leap onto his back. “You squirrely little ...” he mumbles, trying to reach over his shoulders to get a hold on me. Tightening my arms around his thick neck, I squeeze. He gasps for air, and rams my back into the wall. I wheeze as the air whooshes from my lungs, pain splintering through my already bruised chest. But I hold tight, bearing down harder, and cut off his supply of oxygen. Finally, I feel Crew weaken beneath my hold. He drops to his knees, and I only release him once I’m sure he’s knocked out. Stepping around the now limp Crew, I glance at all the wide eyes studying me, and meet the prince’s. Fury ignites his stormy blue irises. I thought he was going to kiss me, but instead he leaned forward and buried his head in my neck, his lips gently pressing against a spot that made my stomach do a happy dance.

“You smell so good,” he mumbled, kissing my neck again.

THE BITTER KINGDOM by Rae Carson

This series is one of my absolute favorites and the ending was perfect but bittersweet. I will miss all of these characters and this world! One of my top 5 book boyfriends comes from this series and that’s why I needed to share a little bit of Hector and Elisa with you!

He lifts his head and considers me thoughtfully. Then he tips up my chin with his thumb and kisses me again—a sweeter, gentler kiss that feels like sun breaking through the clouds.

The pit of my stomach buzzes as I press my forehead into his chest, saying, “I told you that you would kiss me again.”

He laughs. “It’s the ‘and more’ part I remember most vividly.” He gently pushes me away, putting a safe cushion of distance between us. He grabs my hands and lifts them to his lips. “When we reach Bassajuan, maybe I can get you to myself for a while.”

The earth tilts a little.

“In the meantime,” he adds. “I really should teach you how to care for tack. I find myself in need of a distraction.”

I grin. “Good idea.”

Today I have an awesome blog tour post! I love Liz Norris and her books! Unbreakable was an amazing follow up to Unraveling and I am truly sad to see the series end!

Yes he was in book 1 and no I didn’t like him very much but, that was because I didn’t truly know him and everything that makes him tick until Unbreakable. Now that I know Barclay I can honestly say Ben Michaels who? I fell hard for Barclay in Unbreakable and in this post you will see why. On Taylor Barclay

I do a lot of brainstorming and outlining before I start drafting. I even write up character notes.

That doesn't mean the story never surprises me, though. I often have breakthroughs as I'm drafting—a moment where I realize there's something else. A new twist, a different plot direction, another character: it's like I missed a big piece of the story in my planning and I just didn't know it until that moment.

Taylor Barclay was one of those.

He didn't exist in my original notes. And then as I wrote the scene in Unraveling where Janelle hacks her dad's laptop (Chapter 16:23:33:54), Barclay inserted himself into the manuscript (in a form of a conflicting evaluation) and I knew exactly who he was.

He's this guy:

(Side note: I'm a Tim Riggins fan. Aren't we all?)

Anyway, I knew his backstory right away. In fact, even though he was a minor character in most of Unraveling, I thought of him like a main player, because I knew what he was doing behind the scenes. He was important even though he wasn’t on the page.

So naturally when it came time to write Unbreakable, I knew Barclay needed a bigger on-page role in the story. I wanted people to know him like I did.

He appears for the first time on page 46 of in Unbreakable, but it’s not really until chapter 04:11:47:08 that Janelle, and thus everyone else, learns more about him.

Here are Eight Things About Barclay that were in the first draft of Unbreakable but were edited out for space. (It’s a long book)

1.    He’s only a jerk because he’s confident. And he’s confident because he’s usually right. On his North Point entrance exam (a six hour test required in order to get into IA training), he had a perfect score, achieved by leaving one question blank and getting the rest of them right.

2.   He grew up poor with a single mother and an older brother, Tomas. They were always clipping coupons and hoping there was enough money at the end of the month for food.

3.   Tomas was always considered the smart brother, the one who would go on to do great things, which pushed Barclay to work even harder.

4.   He drinks hot cinnamon tea every night before going to bed. And he wakes up early to go for a run and then hit the gym before heading into work.

5.   His idol is Clyde Tolson, the guy who founded IA. He also came from a similar background as Barclay and achieved great things for Prima.

6.   He was picked on in elementary school, until he got bigger and fought back.

7.   He doesn’t ever want a desk job—even if it’s the head of the IA or something prestigious. Paperwork bores him. He always wants to be in the field.

8.   When his mother died, Barclay let his ex-girlfriend Hayley move into his mother’s house. He and Tomas both had city apartments of their own, and he didn’t want to move back into the house he grew up in. He felt like it was a step backwards. He also felt guilty that he broke up with Hayley. He loved her and cared for her, but he knew he couldn’t give her the attention or life she deserved. Too much for his attention was devoted to IA.

And here's an excerpt of "Operation Monument," Barclay's short story which will be part of the Unbreakable Extra Content. This excerpt is taken from near the beginning of his short story. Barclay has just found out that his partner and mentor, Eric Brandt is dead. He’s been told to take a few days off so he’s gone to Eric’s house to examine the scene.

I head to the kitchen and grab the scotch from the cabinet above the fridge. Not the every day stuff or even the good stuff that we used to toast every-time we completed another mission. I go for the unopened bottle that he got from the Governor six years ago for exposing a terrorist threat within New Prima. A bunch of environmentalists planned to bomb headquarters and try to shut down interverse travel. Eric stopped them, almost single-handedly.

    

He was saving the scotch for something big, something worth celebrating. I’d asked him one time about it, and he told me it was for when he did something worthy of a monument. Those are my words. He was more eloquent about it, talking about how he wanted to be heroic, but the words don’t matter when they mean the same thing.

    

They certainly don’t matter now.

    

There won’t be any monuments erected in Eric’s honor. Not now that he’s dead.

    

I fill a glass too full, sit on his couch like I have so many times before, and then I drink it straight from the bottle.

    

It’s good. Doesn’t even burn on the way down, but it still makes my eyes water and my body heavy.

    

The last time I cried, I was five and my brother accidentally broke my nose. He teased me about crying until I punched him and made his nose bleed, too.

    

This time, I’m alone, and there isn’t anyone I can punch in the face in order to feel better.
