Hey all! I have the awesome Cristin Terrill here today to talk about her debut novel ALL OUR YESTERDAYS thanks go to JKS Communications for having me on the tour! I'm super excited for this one as I am a huge Sci-Fi geek.

Marina has everything. She’s got money, popularity, and a bright future. Plus, she’s best friends with the boy next door, who happens to be a gorgeous prodigy from one of America’s most famous families.Em has nothing. Imprisoned in a small white cell in the heart of a secret military base, all she has is the voice of the boy in the cell next door and the list of instructions she finds taped inside the drain.But Marina and Em have one big thing in common: they’re the same person.Now Em must travel back four years in time in order to avert the terrible future from which she’s fled, and there’s only one way to do it. She must kill the person who invented the time machine in the first place: someone from her past. A person she loved.
But Marina won’t let them go without a fight.
Now on to the interview with Cristin!
What was it like
finding out that All Our Yesterdays was going to
be published?
Surreal. When we got the
first offer (the book ended up going to auction), I was out to dinner with a
bunch of my writing friends but wasn’t allowed to tell anyone yet. I cheated
and told my two best friends at the end of the night in the parking lot. I was
basically in shock and therefore unnaturally calm, but they
freaked out.
What made you want
to write about time travel?
I’ve always loved time
travel as a storytelling device, but I never thought about writing a time
travel story myself until the idea for All Our Yesterdays
hit me one night while watching The Terminator
on cable at about three in the morning. I knew I wanted to write that story
because of how dense and twisty I was able to make the plots and relationships
because of the time travel element.
Did anyone in your
personal life inspire your characters?
The relationship between Em
and Marina is very vaguely inspired by my own feelings towards my younger self,
but otherwise no.
Who’s your
favorite character to write?
It changes. Originally I
enjoyed writing in Em’s point-of-view the most, but at some point I started to
prefer Marina’s. I also love writing Finn because he’s a lot of fun and has a
sense of humor similar to my own. So basically I like them all!
What are some of
your favorite sci-fi books and movies?
Well obviously I love the Terminator movies, which gave me the initial inspiration for
the book, and I grew up on Star Wars. But
most of my favorite sci-fi is television like Battlestar
Galactica, Firefly, Doctor Who, and The Sarah Connor
Chronicles.
As for books, some
favorites are A Wrinkle in Time, Ender’s Game, When You Reach Me,
and The Giver.
Did music play any
part in your writing process? If so can you share some of your favorite songs?
I can’t write to music – I
find it too distracting – but there are a few songs that I associate with with
specific scenes or characters from All Our Yesterdays. Like Duncan Sheik’s “Hymn” is
a Finn song, and Imogen
Heap’s “The Walk” is an Em song.
Do you have any
go-to snacks that you have to have while writing?
Nope! I try not to require
anything when writing, because inevitably there will be a day when you have to
write and don’t have that thing. The only things I really need are my laptop
and a certain amount of quiet.
Favorite place
you’ve lived so far?
I lived in London for about
three years and that was definitely my favorite. I would probably still be
there now if it weren’t for my pesky lack-of-citizenship thing.

Cristin Terrill is a
young adult author and aspiring grown-up. She grew up semi-nomadic and
graduated from Vassar College with a degree in drama. After getting her masters
in Shakespeare Studies from the Shakespeare Institute in Stratford-upon-Avon,
she lived in London, Austin, Boston, and Washington, DC while working as a
theatrical stage manager. Now she writes and leads creative writing workshops
for DC-area kids and teens. All Our
Yesterdays is her first novel.
