Now on to the interview!

Hi Jenny! First I want to say welcome to Two Chicks on Books! SAVE ME was awesome and I’m so happy that you could stop by for a visit!

Thanks so much! Glad to be here…

For the readers: can you tell us a little bit about SAVE ME and the characters?

I think the back of the book description does a great job of summing up the story and the main characters.

Here’s the blurb:
Something strange is going on in the tiny coastal town of Liberty, Oregon. Cara has never seen a whale swim close enough for her to touch it—let alone knock her into the freezing water. Fortunately, cute newcomer David is there to save her, and the rescue leads to a bond deeper than Cara ever imagined.

So when she learns David’s interning as a teacher at her school, Cara is devastated. She turns to her best friend for support, but Rachel has changed. She’s suddenly into witchcraft & is becoming dangerously obsessed with her new boyfriend.

Cara has lost her best friend, discovered her soul mate is off limits, and has attracted the attention of a stalker. But she’s not completely alone. Her mysterious, gorgeous new friend Garren is there to support her. But is Garren possibly too perfect?

Is there going to be a sequel?

We shall see… I wrote the novel as a stand-alone, but do have plans for a sequel. For now, though, I’m working on another Hollywood-based YA romance novel that involves astral projection. I got a lot of that story written during NaNoWriMo, so even if I end up putting it aside to work on a sequel for SAVE ME, I’ll be happy to have another story in the works afterward…

Were any of the characters in the book inspired by people from your real life?

I think that all the characters I come up with are a combination of traits of both my own and others that I know or observe. But there are always a ton of blue sky details, too—stuff that comes from nowhere but my imagination…

Who was your favorite character to write? What about your least favorite?

The villain, Amber, was for sure the funnest to write. Bad guys are a blast. You just have to make sure they don’t steal the show. In SAVE ME’s case, I also had to make sure that a good guy--Garren, the guardian angel--didn’t steal the show. Arguably, for some readers, he might have. I think that’s okay, though. Because even though he’s not a romantic love interest, there still is a genuinely sweet love story between him and the main character, Cara…

What is your favorite passage/scene in SAVE ME?

When Cara and David admit their feelings for each other after agonizing over having to resist their attraction. This would be the kiss scene on the beach. I swooned when I wrote it. I still swoon when I read it. And if the writer swoons, odds are great that most readers will too…

What kind of research did you have to do for the story? Did you have to do some whale watching?

I chose the setting in large part because I spent my childhood vacationing at the Oregon coast. I mostly did deep sea fishing, but I’ve been whale watching a handful of times as well. There are lots of websites with great information, too…

What are you reading right now? Or what do you have on your TBR that you’re dying to read?

It makes me sad that I’ll never be able to read all the books on my TBR list…:( I just finished THE ALCHEMIST by Paulo Coelho, and am most looking forward to reading THE RAFT by S.A. Bodeen. I tweeted with her a while back that I couldn’t wait to read it. Since then, my daughter and her classmates have all read it and loved it. I may be strange, but I enjoy any story that even hints at the threat of a shark attack… :)

Who is your ultimate Book Boyfriend?

He seems to have developed a bad rap over the years, but I’m going to go with Edward Cullen. The guy might be an obsessive, peeping Tom with anger issues, but he’s also about as devoted as they come. His love is true. And that’s what counts the most to me in a book boyfriend…

What inspired you to write YA?

TWILIGHT, actually. I was working at a book fair and the teenage girls were nuts about the saga. I asked them about the books and took note of what they said they loved. Then I read the books and also loved them. Still, I wanted to read about a forbidden romance that could happen in real life, and I preferred the paranormal aspects to remain apart from the main characters. So I wrote the type of story I wanted to read…

Lightening Round Questions

Twitter or Facebook?
Facebook. Most of the time I’m far too long-winded to keep things to 140 characters…

Favorite Superhero?
Iron Man, because of his character’s humor, at least in The Avengers.

Here’s my favorite bit:

Captain America: Big man, in a suit of armour… take that away, what are you?

Iron Man: Uh… a genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist.

Uh…  Yeah… Well, minus the playboy part. ;)

Favorite TV show?
I’m not a big TV watcher, but I’ve always thought The Simpsons is hilarious…

Sweet or Salty?
Sweet…

Any Phobias?
Sharks… My parents took me to the drive-ins to watch JAWS when I was 2. I was so scared that I still remember blips that I saw through the windshield. Now, I’m obsessed. JAWS is my favorite movie. I will never swim in the ocean…

Song you can’t get enough of right now?
In keeping with the TWILIGHT theme, I listen to the scores from all the movies in the saga a lot. Instrumental music, especially of the movie variety, gets my creative juices flowing…

Fall Movie you’re most looking forward to?
Definitely Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1…

Thanks so much Jenny for answering my questions!

Thanks for having me! I hope readers will enjoy reading SAVE ME as much as I enjoyed writing it… :D
