When Kate Thompson’s father is killed by the notorious Rose Riders for a mysterious journal that reveals the secret location of a gold mine, the eighteen-year-old disguises herself as a boy and takes to the gritty plains looking for answers and justice. What she finds are devious strangers, dust storms, and a pair of brothers who refuse to quit riding in her shadow. But as Kate gets closer to the secrets about her family, she gets closer to the truth about herself and must decide if there's room for love in a heart so full of hate.
In the spirit of True Grit, the cutthroat days of the Wild West come to life for a new generation.
Now on to the interview!
Who was your favorite character to write? What about your least favorite?
What is your favorite passage/scene in VENGEANCE ROAD?
Hi Erin! First I want to say welcome to Two Chicks on Books! I am
super excited to read VENGEANCE ROAD I love westerns and am so happy that you
could stop by for a visit!
For the readers: can you tell us a
little bit about VENGEANCE ROAD and the characters?
Vengeance Road is
a Wild West revenge story set in 1877 Arizona. It follows Kate Thompson as she
attempts to avenge her father’s murder only to find herself entangled in a
bloody quest for lost gold. Along the way, she’ll cross paths with the
notorious Rose Riders, a vicious gang led by Waylan Rose, as well as make a few
allies, among them a pair of cowboy brothers and a young Apache girl. Everyone
is shades of gray in this novel, and that was my favorite part of writing it.
Were any of the characters in the
book inspired by people from your real life?
Not
really. I tend to put pieces of people I know into all my characters, but I’ve
never modeled a character after one specific person.
Who was your favorite character to write? What about your least favorite?
Kate was
my favorite, which is maybe unsurprising since the book is narrated in first
person and I spent a lot of time in her head. She is so plucky and stubborn and
spitfire; such a fun character to write. As for least favorite? I actually
loved writing all the characters in this book. But I will say that I found
writing the villains challenging. They are very, very bad people and sometimes it’s difficult to get into that
mindspace.
What is your favorite passage/scene in VENGEANCE ROAD?
The
opening scene of Chapter 7, when Kate and the Colton brothers reach White Tank
is definitely my favorite. Just thinking about that scene makes me smile.
What are you reading right now? Or
what do you have on your TBR that you’re dying to read?
I just
finished reading an ARC of Susan Dennard’s TRUTHWITCH (so good!), and I’m dying
to get my hands on Rae Carson’s WALK ON EARTH A STRANGER. I’m so pumped to see
more westerns hitting the YA shelves.

About Erin:
Erin grew up in rural Connecticut, where she spent most of her
childhood telling stories. It is rumored that her first words were not
"Mama" or "Dada," but "Once upon a time." In
middle school, when kids were going off to sleep-away camp for the summer, Erin
was attending writing camp and penning short stories.
She studied web design (and minored in Creative Writing because
she couldn’t stay away from stories) at the Rochester Institute of Technology
in upstate New York. After several years working in advertising and designing
websites for various brands, she moved from Boston to New Hampshire, where she
now lives with her family and writes full-time.
When not writing, Erin can often be found hiking, geeking out
over good typography, and obsessing over all things Harry Potter. She drinks a
lot of coffee, buys far too many books, and is not terribly skilled at writing
about herself in the third person.
She is represented by Sara Crowe of Harvey Klinger, and is the
author of the Taken Trilogy (available from HarperTeen) and Vengeance Road (HMH
Books for Young Readers).
