The remarkable third novel in Sara B. Larson's bestselling Defy series!
At last, Alexa and King Damian are engaged to be married. But their lives are far from safe. The kingdom of Antion is under siege, and Rylan is a prisoner of the enemy. Even worse, Alexa remains at the mercy of the evil Dansiian Rafe, who con trols her mind and can force Alexa to kill or harm Damian at any moment. Despite this, Alexa is determined to rescue Rylan, which soon leads her far from Damian and deep into enemy territory.
When she arrives, what awaits her is deadlier than anything she could have ever imagined: an army of black sorcerers, and a horrifying plot to destroy the world as Alexa knows it. Will she be able to gather the strength to free herself, protect the love of her life, and save the land? Will there ever be true peace?
Acclaimed author Sara B. Larson has woven a stunning, romantic, and evocative finale to the Defy trilogy, that is sure to leave readers breathless until the very last page.
Now on to the interview!
What is your favorite passage/scene in ENDURE?
Hi Sara! First I want to say welcome back to Two
Chicks on Books! I freaking love the DEFY series and just finished ENDURE it
was the perfect ending! And I am so happy that you could stop by for a visit!
Thank
you SO much for having me! I’m so thrilled that you loved how the series ended.
It was a very emotional book for me to write and I’m thrilled to finally get to
share it.
For the
readers: can you tell us a little bit about the DEFY series and the characters?
Defy is about Alexa (Alex) who must cut off her hair
and pretend to be a boy alongside her twin brother to avoid a horrific fate as
an orphan in the kingdom of Antion. Together with a mercurial prince and her
best friend, they try to save their people from the king’s tyranny and
establish peace—all while possibly losing her heart.
How was it
writing the finale? Was it bittersweet?
It was incredibly bittersweet. As I said above, I
got so emotional many times while writing ENDURE. I was full on ugly crying at
multiple points in this book. I’m so happy I finally got to write out scenes I
had been planning and dreaming of for years. But while it was so exciting and
wonderful, it was also a little bit heartbreaking to know this was the end for
these characters.
Is this
really the end for the DEFY series or might we see some novellas or a spin-off
series?
At this point, it really is the end. Never say
never, but right now I’m not sure what else I could do in this world that could
top what Alexa went through. But we’ll see!
Who was
your favorite character to write? What about your least favorite?
Besides the obvious, with Alexa, I think Damian is
still my favorite. But honestly, I loved writing so many of these characters,
it’s really hard to choose. My least favorite was probably The Summoner. He was
just SO creepy it was hard to write some of his scenes.
What is your favorite passage/scene in ENDURE?
I can’t really answer without being spoilery, but
definitely the final two scenes, plus a reunion at one point in the book.
What are
you reading right now? Or what do you have on your TBR that you’re dying to
read?
I’m reading an ARC of TRUTHWITCH and I’m loving it!
Who is
your ultimate Book Boyfriend?
You mean besides my own characters? ;-) I still
really love Tarver from THESE BROKEN STARS, Anton from BURNING GLASS, and Akiva
from DAUGHTER OF SMOKE AND BONE.
What
inspired you to write YA?
It’s always just been my natural voice, I guess. I
always gravitate toward stories around this time in life, whether they are
fantasy or not.
What are you working on next now that the DEFY
series is over?
I have something new in the works that I am SO
excited about, but can’t announce details yet. Stay tuned for more, hopefully
soon!
Lightening
Round Questions
Twitter or
Facebook?
Instagram, ha ha. My favorite part of social media
is seeing pictures, so Instagram is my personal fave.
Favorite
Superhero?
Thor, but mostly because it’s Chris Hemsworth.
Favorite
TV show?
I honestly don’t have one right now, I hardly ever
get to watch any TV for myself. But I did sneak in a few reruns of FRIENDS a
few weeks ago and it reminded me of how much I love that show.
Sweet or
Salty?
Sweet
Any
Phobias?
I can’t stand the sound of napkins tearing, so I
rarely use them. If they stick to my skin… *shudders*
Song you
can’t get enough of right now?
HELLO by Adele, although I’m scared it’s going to
get overplayed all too soon.
2016 Movie
you’re most looking forward to?
I can’t pick just one…I can’t wait for FANTASTIC
BEASTS because: HARRY POTTER WORLD. No explanation needed. But also ALLEGIANT
(mostly because of Theo James, let’s be honest. I think he would be a fantastic
Rylan, btw…), and HUNTSMAN: Winter’s War because: Chris Hemsworth! Oh, and
FINDING DORY! I love that character so much. And probably THE FINEST HOURS too,
because it looks intense and Chris Pine. So, obviously I am easily swayed by
casting.
Thanks so
much Sara for answering my questions! I can’t wait to read whatever you write
next!
Thank
you so much for having me!! I can’t wait to share more of my stories with you!
About
Sara:
Sara B. Larson is the
author of the acclaimed YA fantasy DEFY, and the sequels IGNITE and ENDURE. She
can’t remember a time when she didn’t write books—although she now uses a
computer instead of a Little Mermaid notebook. Sara lives in Utah with her
husband and their three children. She writes in brief snippets throughout the
day (while mourning the demise of naptime) and the quiet hours when most people
are sleeping. Her husband claims she should have a degree in “the art of
multitasking.” When she’s not mothering or writing, you can often find her at
the gym repenting for her sugar addiction.

Alexa Hollen is a fighter. Forced to disguise herself as a boy and serve in the king's army, Alex uses her quick wit and fierce sword-fighting skills to earn a spot on the elite prince's guard. But when a powerful sorcerer sneaks into the palace in the dead of night, even Alex, who is virtually unbeatable, can't prevent him from abducting her, her fellow guard and friend Rylan, and Prince Damian, taking them through the treacherous wilds of the jungle and deep into enemy territory.
The longer Alex is held captive with both Rylan and the prince, the more she realizes that she is not the only one who has been keeping dangerous secrets. And suddenly, after her own secret is revealed, Alex finds herself confronted with two men vying for her heart: the safe and steady Rylan, who has always cared for her, and the dark, intriguing Damian. With hidden foes lurking around every corner, is Alex strong enough to save herself and the kingdom she's sworn to protect?
The trilogy sounds amazing and I've been eyeing it for quite some time. I'm really stoked now that it's complete (I'm terribly forgetful so I prefer to marathon). Thanks! :)
ReplyDeleteI was so excited when this downloaded before y/e. And can't believe I haven't had the time to dive in yet. So nervous because this is a series-ender but after the way things left off... yeah. Love the interview! :) And oh no if the author was crying, I will probably be totally shattered. Definitely a favorite series.
