Lia Nautilus may be a Mermaid, but she’s never lived in the ocean. Ever since the infamous Little Mermaid unleashed a curse that stripped Mer of their immortality, war has ravaged the Seven Seas.
So Lia has grown up in a secret community of land-dwelling Mer hidden among Malibu’s seaside mansions. Her biggest problems are surviving P.E. and keeping her feelings for Clay Ericson in check. Sure, he’s gorgeous in that cocky, leather jacket sort of way and makes her feel like there’s a school of fish swimming in her stomach, but getting involved with a human could put Lia's entire community at risk. So it’s for the best that he’s dating that new girl, right?
That is, until Lia finds out she isn't the only one at school keeping a potentially deadly secret. And this new girl? Her eyes are dead set on Clay, who doesn't realize the danger he's in. If Lia hopes to save him, she’ll have to get closer to Clay than ever. Lia’s parents would totally flip if they found out she was falling for a human boy, but the more time she spends with Clay, the harder it is for Lia to deny her feelings. After making a horrible mistake, Lia will risk everything to stop Clay from falling in love with the wrong girl.
Now on to the post!
Hi, all! I’ve been reading (and loving!) this blog for such a long time, and I am SO excited to be here today sharing Emerge secrets with you.
Whenever I reflect back on a book that’s meant something to me, certain scenes stand out in my mind that really represent that particular book. So, today we’ll be walking (and sometimes swimming) through my favorite scenes from Emerge.
1. The first time we see the grottos.
A system of secret caves and underwater tunnels lies hidden underneath the beachfront estates in Lia’s community. So, when Lia takes us from the upper levels of her home down into these sparkling grottos, it’s our first peak into the world of Mermaids. This is when the book starts to get magical.
2. When Lia and Clay first meet.
At the beginning of the story, Lia and Clay have already known each other for about a year, and Lia hints at some history between them. Later in the book, we find out what that history is when we see what it was like when Lia and Clay met for the first time. This is the only scene that wasn’t in my first draft—it wasn’t even in the book when it sold to my publisher. My editor suggested I write it, and I’m so glad I did because it allows readers to steal a glimpse into Clay and Lia’s past.
3. Any scene with Lapis and Lazuli.
Lia’s older twin sisters are two of my favorite characters to write because they always say what others would deem inappropriate but what is—at least usually—the thing that most needs to be said. Although they’re very different from each other, both of them are fun, clever, and hot—and they know it.
4. Lia’s first kiss in the story.
I won’t say who it’s with, but I will say that by the time it happens, I hope readers are longing for it as much as I was when I wrote it. So many mixed emotions suffuse that scene, and the kiss is just…heart wrenching.
5. When Clay may or may not catch Lia in her tail.
This just might be my favorite scene in the entire book, and it’s so hard not to give spoilers, guys! Clay drops by Lia’s house unexpectedly and she’s stuck in the pool, terrified he’ll see her tail if he comes closer. He thinks she’s plastered herself against the side of the pool to hide the fact that she’s naked, and he teases her mercilessly about it. Tons of sexual tension ensues—and then things get a lot more serious.
I hope you enjoy these scenes and all the others in between. I’d love to know what you think!
