This beauty isn’t sleeping! Sarah Prineas’s darkly imaginative retelling breaks down the classic story of Sleeping Beauty in a big, bold way. Brimming with action and romance, beautiful Rose must escape the curse that will force the kingdom to fall into a century-long slumber and fights for the freedom to find her own happily ever after.
After the spell protecting her is destroyed, Rose seeks safety in the world outside the valley she had called home. She’s been kept hidden all her life to delay the three curses she was born with, curses that will have drastic consequences if they take effect. Accompanied by the handsome and mysterious Griff and Quirk, his witty and warmhearted partner, Rose tries to escape from the ties that bind her to this forced fairy tale. But will the path they take lead them to freedom, or will it bring them straight into the prescribed story they are trying to avoid?
Set in the world of Prineas’s Ash & Bramble fifty years later, Rose & Thorn is a powerful retelling of Sleeping Beauty. If you like your fairy tales dark, your heroines daring, and your suitors dashing, this is the book for you.
Now on to the interview!
Hi Sarah! First I want to say welcome back to Two Chicks on Books! ROSE
& THORN was absolutely fantastic and I can’t wait for everyone to read it!
And am so happy that you could stop by for a visit!
Thanks so much for the kind words!
:D
For the readers:
can you tell us a little bit about ROSE & THORN and the characters?
Sure! Rose & Thorn is a sleeping beauty retelling with a twist—the “prince” is the one who needs to be awakened, and
the “beauty” carries an
axe. It’s also about stories, and how
they try to shape who you are and who you can become—and pushing back
against those forces to become most truly yourself. There’s also
kissing.
Will there be a 3rd
book? And if so do you have a title yet or who it’ll be about?
There is not! I considered it,
but a middle grade book idea grabbed me (it’s about a boy who is a dragon), so
that’ll be my next book (apart from one of the MG Spirit Animals series, which comes out next year) (sorry, I talk in
parentheses a lot).
Were any of the
characters in the book inspired by people from your real life?
Nope! I get asked this question
a lot. The only character I’ve written
who was inspired by a real ... creature ... is a cat from my Magic Thief series. Everybody else is made up.
Who was your
favorite character to write? What about your least favorite?
The same person: Quirk! Writing
him was very fun, but also difficult.
He’s a super fun character to write because he’s funny (he names his
biceps, for example) (I think that’s hilarious; YMMV). But he was hardest to write because he knows
a lot that he doesn’t tell, and keeping his secrets was tough.
What is your
favorite passage/scene in ROSE & THORN?
My favorite moment is when Rose and Griff have been kissing and Rose
has to leave and says, “I’ll kiss you tomorrow...” She turns red and corrects
herself: “I’ll see you tomorrow, I
mean.”
What kind of
research did you have to do for the story?
It’s the sleeping beauty story, so of course there has to be a
spindle. But there’s no spinning wheel—the spindle is
used by a woman who is hand-spinning flax into thread for making lace. A Twitter friend who spins helped me get the
details right (I changed some things for writerly reasons, but the spinning is
essentially correct).
Who is your
ultimate book boyfriend?
I have a passionate love-hate relationship with Eugenides from Megan
Whelan Turner’s Queen’s Thief series. Or
maybe it’s hate-love. Depends on what
happens in the next book...
What inspired you to
write YA?
I have (*counts on fingers*) seven middle grade novels out, and had no plans to write YA, but Ash & Bramble dropped fully formed
into my head and I had to write it. It
was very weird.

Questions
What are you
reading right now? Or what do you have on your TBR that you’re dying to read?
I cannot wait to read Like a
River Glorious, the sequel to Rae Carson’s terrific Walk on Earth a Stranger.
What Hogwarts
House would the Sorting Hat place you in?
SLYTHERIN!!!
Twitter or Facebook?
Erm. Both? But not Instagram.
Favorite TV show?
I don’t watch any TV. Or see
movies. Visual media isn’t my thing—give me a
book!
:D
Sweet or Salty?
Both. As long as they have
plenty of fat added.
Any Phobias?
Nope. I actually love snakes
(see Slytherin, above).
Song you can’t get
enough of right now?
“Superstition” by Stevie Wonder.
Thanks so much Sarah for answering my questions! I can’t wait for
everyone to read ROSE & THORN!
