I am thrilled to be hosting a spot on the blog tour for DAMAGED GOODS by Jennifer Bardsley! have an interview with Jennifer to share with you today! And make sure to enter the awesome giveaway!!
Haven't heard of DAMAGED GOODS? Check it out!
Blanca has everything she ever wanted, a hot boyfriend named Seth and the loving support of her foster father, Cal. She’s finally escaped the abusive control of her birth father, Barbelo Nemo, and her tortured childhood at Tabula Rasa School.
But the scars of Blanca’s Vestal upbringing run deep, especially when the FBI start asking questions. Blanca feels abandoned by Seth who is hunting for Lilith, Blanca’s only blood relative. The Defectos, a support group of Vestal-Rejects, offer Blanca comfort instead.
While the Vestal order crumbles, Chinese rivals called the Guardians rise to power and wrest control of important Tabula Rasa contacts. Now Blanca’s life is in peril once more, and this time, Blanca struggles to recognize friend from foe.
Now on to the interview!
Jennifer: Thank you so much for having me on your blog!
For the readers: can you tell us a little bit about DAMAGED GOODS and the characters?
Jennifer: DAMAGED GOODS is about a girl named Blanca who grew up in a quasi-religious cult called the Vestals. Now Blanca’s (almost) all grown up, and she’s struggling to overcome nineteen years of brainwashing. Can she trust her boyfriend, Seth? Does her adopted father Cal have her best interest at heart? To add to Blanca’s confusion, the FBI is investigating the Vestals and Blanca is their key
witness. Blanca wants justice, but she also wants to protect the people she loves.
Were any of the characters in the book inspired by people from your real life?
Jennifer: All of my characters are fictional, but I did put a lot of my passion about mothering into the character of Pilar. I don’t yell as much, but I am pretty fierce when it comes to protecting my children.
Who was your favorite character to write? What about your least favorite?
Jennifer: My favorite character to write was Cal McNeal because to me he represents the type of father everyone would like to have. Cal will do anything to maintain a positive relationship with his son Seth, and even though Cal makes mistakes he always tries to fix them. The YA community talks a lot about book-boyfriends, but I think book-fathers are equally important.
What is your favorite passage/scene in DAMAGED GOODS?
Jennifer: I don’t want to give away spoilers, but the airplane scenes were fun to write, especially the second one. Hopefully, I catch a lot of people off guard and freak them out.
What kind of research did you have to do for the story?
Jennifer: I spent an extensive amount of time researching brainwashing for both GENESIS GIRL and DAMAGED GOODS. If the FBI ever got ahold of my record at the public library, they would probably think I’m plotting to form an evil cult.
Who is your ultimate book boyfriend?
Jennifer: This might sound cliché, but I have to say Peeta Mellark from THE HUNGER GAMES. I love his kindness and devotion.
What inspired you to write YA?
Jennifer: When I was in high school I never got to read anything fun. All of my time was devoted to trying to take down my academic nemesis, and beat him to the valedictorian stage. I was obsessed! If a book wasn’t on my AP reading list, I didn’t read it. Now I’m enjoying a much more relaxed approach to reading, which is why GENESIS GIRL and DAMAGED GOODS are meant to be entertaining, fast-paced, and fun.
