Title: FLICKER AND MIST
Author: Mary G. Thompson
Pub. Date: January 3, 2017
Publisher: Clarion Books
Pages: 384
Formats: Hardcover, eBook
Romance, intrigue, and plenty of action are woven into a rich and suspenseful narrative in this powerful YA fantasy. The mixed-race heroine Myra is a Flickerkin and can flicker (become invisible) at will. She hasn’t cultivated or revealed this ability, since Flickerkin are persecuted as potential criminals and spies. When invisible people become tricksters and then murderers, Myra’s Flickerkin heritage becomes a deadly secret, putting her relationship with the leader’s son—and her own life—in jeopardy. Loyalties shift and difficult choices are made before Myra understands who she wants to be.

Now on to the interview!

Hi Mary! First I want to say welcome to Two Chicks on Books! FLICKER AND MIST was absolutely fantastic and I can’t wait for everyone to read it! And am so happy that you could stop by for a visit!

For the readers: can you tell us a little bit about FLICKER AND MIST and the characters?

Myra is secretly a Flickerina person who can become invisible. But Flickerkin are banned in New Heart City because the government fears them. Myra is in love with Caster, who is the son of the head of the oppressive government. She wants to stay with him and her best friend, Porti, and ride in the annual athletic contest, which she’s dreamed of winning. But when her mother is arrested, she must turn to Nolan, a renegade Flickerin boy, for help. As Myra learns more about her heritage, her world expands and is turned upside down. She must decide what to fight for.

Is this a standalone or a series? And if it’s a series do you have a title for book 2 yet? And if it’s a standalone what are you working on next?

I would like to do a sequel, but I don’t know yet if it will happen. I have been working on another book set in the same universe as Flicker and Mist, but with different characters, and I’m also working on some contemporary projects. Stay tuned!

Were any of the characters in the book inspired by people from your real life?

Not consciously! I wish I could say Caster was based on my boyfriend or something, but sadly, I made him up.

Who was your favorite character to write? What about your least favorite?

I loved writing Porti because she has a lot of complexity for a secondary character. She is a selfless person who does the right thing and loves deeply, and she also has self-sabotaging pride. Her story is really both wonderful and tragic, and I would love the opportunity to write more about her. I can’t say there is any character I disliked writing, because I love writing villainous characters too!

What is your favorite passage/scene in FLICKER AND MIST?

Probably the scene that starts on page 196 where Nolan teaches Myra to flicker. What girl doesn’t want to get up close and personal with a sexy boy while listening to her boyfriend defend her honor to his evil father? It has everything.

What kind of research did you have to do for the story?

This world isn’t based on any existing mythology, so there was no specific research. I read a lot about subjects that are useful in worldbuilding, like history and politics and religion, so in a way I’m researching for my books all the time.

What inspired you to write YA?

I sort of fell into it because my first book, Wuftoom, was a horror story about a kid, and I wrote it without thinking about what genre it would fall into. Now I have trouble thinking of stories about adults.
