Emory Fae enjoys leading a quiet, normal life. That is until two mysterious, and handsome soldiers show up at her apartment, and the life she knew is instantly whisked away. Memphis Carter and Brokk Foster come from the magical and war ridden world of Kiero, and bringing Emory back she will discover she is the long lost heir to the Royal Line and is thrown into the Black Dawn Rebellion with a dynamic role to ignite the rebels and reclaim her throne.

With both men being darkly woven in her past Emory uncovers hidden secrets, a power held long dormant, and will soon realize there are worse things than supernatural humans, love, loss, betrayal, and a Mad King.

Some things are better left in the shadows.

Now on to the interview!

Hey Mal Happy Almost Valentines Day!! First I want to say welcome to Two Chicks on Books I’m so happy you could stop by for a chat! BLACK DAWN was freaking AWESOME (Memphis *swoons*) and I can’t wait for everyone to read it!

For the readers: can you tell us a little bit about BLACK DAWN and the characters?

Absolutely! Black Dawn follows the story of Emory Fae who was placed on Earth for her own protection from her world, and Black Dawn follows her story as she returns home. This book will introduce the characters of Black Dawn Rebellion, where we meet Memphis, Brokk, Alby, Bryd, Jaxson, Wyatt and Nyx. Without too many spoilers, this book follows Emory’s struggle as she not only is introduced back into a world of magic but also where she is the rightful heir to the throne. She is a pawn to the Rebellion since their war is one with Adair Stratton, an old friend from the Academy as they try to free their world from his reign. As the story progresses and Emory as a character grows, we will explore her decisions as she takes her fate into her own hands.

Is this a standalone or a series? And if it’s a series do you have a title for book 2
yet? And if it’s a standalone what are you working on next?

I’m excited to say a series! Book two is currently done, but I’m also working on another project so it won’t enter the road to editing with my publisher until the fall. It will be released in 2018, but the title is Queen to Ashes.

Were any of the characters in the book inspired by people from your real life?

As a writer, I have thought a lot about this question. None of my characters are inspired by people from my life, but there are specific experiences and feelings that some of my characters go through come from my own personal life experiences. In a magical world where we explore people of extraordinary ability I believe it makes them more relatable to know that they feel love and loss and all other human emotions ;)

Who was your favorite character to write? What about your least favorite?

My favorite character to write is my villain, Adair Stratton. I am SO excited to share his story more as I explore his character in the second book in more depth.  This is a hard one for my least favorite I am going to have to say this can be Memphis. This is only because I have a serious love/ hate relationship with his character to begin with, and writing his storyline can be exciting and very frustrating all at the same time! He is a stubborn, complicated guy ;)

What is your favorite passage/scene in BLACK DAWN?

There are a lot, but one of my favorites is when we first get introduced to Azarius. One of my all-time favorite passages in this part is, “A slight breeze tousled her hair as he breathed heavily, eyes flicking back and forth as he took her in. Narrowing them, he murmured, “So you ae both dangerous and important.”
She had nothing to say because she agreed.”

What kind of research did you have to do for the story?

For Black Dawn I did a lot of Irish mythology research. My super villains, the Oilean, were born from this research, and as the series continues I will explore and adapt the concept of faerie rings and the realm of dark faeries further.

Who is your ultimate book boyfriend?

Oh man this is a tough question!! But my ultimate book boyfriend would have to be Akiva from Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor. If you haven’t read this series do it!! You won’t be disappointed!!

Was this always an adult story in your mind? I see a ton of YA crossover appeal.

I love this question! The original manuscript was not an adult story, but when I revisited it and started rewriting I knew that it had developed into an adult story, with of course YA elements. The characters, what they go through and have gone through, I imagined them in their early/ later twenties. Especially in the second book, Queen to Ashes, the storyline gets quite dark and so I found it fitting to write the characters older.

Lightening Round Questions
