All three teens come together when Breaker is given seven days to fix a wrecked enemy starship or their home, and peace, is forfeit..

Now on to the interview!

Hey Abby! First I want to say welcome to Two Chicks on Books! WHEN PLANETS FALL was absolutely fantastic and I can’t wait to read it! And am so happy that you could stop by for a visit!

Thanks so much for having me! I’m so so excited to be here J

For the readers: can you tell us a little bit about WHEN PLANETS FALL and the characters?

I’ll do it rapid fire stylestarships, war, siblings, disability, home, blood, betrayal. The main character is Breaker. He’s 18, built his own prosthesis, a little uptight, and will do anything for his little brother. The other two POVs are Malani and Luka. Malani is a Human that was raised by the blue-blooded Eliks and taken prisoner by the green-blooded Herons. She also has body modded metal wings and secrets. Luka, like Breaker, is willing to do most anything for his sister. He also has migraines and a love of power and justice.

Do you have a title for book 2 yet?

Not yet! I have a couple potentials in mind. But (as of right now) they will all follow the When ___ Falls theme. Fun FactWHEN PLANETS FALL had a different title in its beginning and middle stages. It was called RED BLOOD, RED PLANET. All my original files are titled RBRP.

Were any of the characters in the book inspired by people from your real life?

I am the oldest of five kids (whoop whoop!! Firstborn pride). There’s many aspects of my sibling relationships that unconsciously seeped in Breaker and Brody’s, both good and bad. Even Yana and Luka’s. The only specific inspiration was taken from my husband. His brother died when he younger. Even though it was a while ago, he still wrestles with the loss. That’s where the initial idea of Brandon and Breaker came from.

Who was your favorite character to write? What about your least favorite?

Honestly, every character was my favorite while I was writing. I kept thinking I LOVE YOU I LOVE YOU I LOVE YOU to all the characters. Now that I’ve had distance, I’ll have to choose Luka. He’s so interesting and one of those characters with way deeper stories than originally planned. If I told him that, it’d just piss him off.

What is your favorite passage/scene in WHEN PLANETS FALL?

So many. I love all the fight scenesnot pow-pow action fight scenes, but yelling/arguing fight scenes. Emotions run so high in the middle of a fight, you almost always miss what’s really going on and what the other person is trying to say. That’s ripe for story. But the moment that makes me laugh the most is when Breaker takes Malani to his apartment for the first time. I laughed the entire time during the table moment.

What kind of research did you have to do for the story?

Everything from space engines to prosthetic legs to mineral deposits to the effects of electrocution and concussions to the psychological effects of torture to linguistic evolution to the development of pidgin to the brain’s neuroplasticity. . . I took so many notes.

Who is your ultimate book boyfriend?

You’re totally going to laugh. I’ve always had a massive soft spot for Martin the Warrior from the Redwall series. I’m not 100% convinced he’s a mouse. In terms of humans, I crush hard on Kvothe from The Kingkiller Chronicles. We’d either be destined for literary romance . . . or literary enemies. We are both stubborn and eccentric, but I cannot stand egos.

What inspired you to write YA?

My siblings! I wanted to write something they would enjoy reading. But turns out they aren’t book people (I know. How are we related??). But I honestly fell in love with the genre. I think kidlit is way more creative than other genres and far more interesting (but of course, I’m biased J ).

Lightening Round Questions

What are you reading right now? Or what do you have on your TBR that you’re dying to read?

Wintersong by S. Jae Jones, Silence and Beauty by Fujimura (been chewing on this one slowly), just finished Big Game by Stuart Gibbs, and just starting Fragile Chaos by Amber R. Duell. I’ve got several research books that I’m plodding through too. I tend to binge read. I’ll go to the library, rent 20 books, and read them all in two weeks. Then not read for another two weeks because I’m in writing mode.

What Hogwarts House would the Sorting Hat place you in?

Gryffindor. (I think I’m the only person alive who is upset at being in Gryffindor. I really wanted Ravenclaw.)

Twitter or Facebook?

Instagram. Ha.

Favorite Superhero?

Cisco from The Flash. He’s funny, we’d be friends in real life, and he’s not perfect or annoying.

Favorite TV show?

The Last Airbender, Once Upon A Time, Firefly, Battlestar Galatica (the remake), Doctor Who, Vampire Diaries, H2O (the original), My Little Pony, Sherlock and Elementary, Merlinanything with unpredictable plot and great characters.

Sweet or Salty?

Sweet. Baked gluten-free sweets. Why eat candy when you can eat BROWNIES?

Any Phobias?

Fire. And having a migraine so bad I actually die from it.

Song you can’t get enough of right now?

I mostly listen to instrumental or musicals (my family is a real-life musical. As in, you walk with them down the street and they randomly bust into perfectly harmonized songs with coordinated dance steps as if on cue). But I’m in love with anything that mixes strings with a grungy sound right now.

2017 Movie you’re most looking forward to?

I haven’t seen Beauty and the Beast yet!!  So that one! And yes, I plan to wear a princess crown. It’s big and sparkly.

Thanks so much Abby for answering my questions! I can’t wait for everyone to read WHEN PLANETS FALL!

THANK YOU!!
