Hey everyone! I am thrilled to be hosting a spot on the blog tour for PLATFORM DWELLERS by Katarina Boudreaux! This book sounds absolutely fantastic and I can't wait to read it!
I have an interview with Katarina to share with you today! And make sure to enter the giveaway below!
Haven't heard of PLATFORM DWELLERS? Check it out!
On the remnants of oil platforms in the Gulf of Mexico and Dauphin Island, Joe is a typical Nob Platform teenager, except that her Mom left a year ago for a more social Platform, and her Dad sometimes forgets she exists. But she knows she wants a career in Communications, so her high school senior project “See-Saw” focuses on long-distance underwater connections. Drayton, Joe’s best friend, discovers lights moving on Land at the same time Joe picks up SOS signals with her See-Saw.
Though Land has been silent since technology was destroyed during the Moralist Revolution, Joe and Drayton discover that the Platform Planning Commission (PPC) seems to be ultimately responsible for the Bone Virus that precipitated the Revolution. They enlist the help of Flox, a debunked scientist, to take them to Land to investigate the remnants of human Land society—before the PPC can stop them. What they find on Land will forever change the course of their lives and the lives of all Platform Dwellers.
Now on to the interview!
Hey
Katarina!! First I want to say welcome to Two Chicks on Books I’m glad you
could stop by for a chat! PLATFORM DWELLERS sounds AWESOME and I can’t wait for
everyone to read it!
For the readers: can you tell us a little bit about PLATFORM DWELLERS
and the characters?
PLATFORM DWELLERS is about a society living on the
remnants of oil platforms in the Gulf of Mexico. Land has been silent since
technology was destroyed during the Moralist Revolution, but the Platforms are
vibrantly alive. The PC has tight control of Platform life, so when Joe and
Drayton discover SOS signals from Land and historical inaccuracies, they have
to investigate the remnants of Land.
Joe is a smart, tenacious teenage girl who misses
her Mom, but wants to achieve greatness in her future career. Drayton, Joe’s
best friend, is a mechanical whiz with idealistic principles. Flox, a debunked
scientist, is crazily sane, and Lisette is more interested in soil and plants than
people most of the time.
Is this the start to a series or a standalone?
I have the next book written in my mind, so a
series!!!
Were any of the characters in the book inspired by people from your
real life?
Absolutely. I teach music and dance, and some of my
students’ characteristics are definitely embedded into the characters.
Who was your favorite character to write? What about your least
favorite?
Flox was my favorite character to write because he
is full of quirky depths and details and just fun to see come alive. My least
favorite was Lisette because I wanted her to be the kind of friend you always
wanted to have, but never did - which was challenging to get right.
What is your favorite passage/scene in PLATFORM DWELLERS?
I love the scene when Joe is first introduced to
Flox. It really lives for me.
What kind of research did you have to do for the story?
Because of the setting, I did massive research on
Platforms, ocean life, technology relating to living completely off land — which means off the grid,
so production of electricity, clean water, communications. The entire Platform
world!
Who is your ultimate book boyfriend?
Mr. Darcy from Pride and Prejudice. Since like
forever.
What inspired you to write YA?
I wanted to write strong characters to inspire young
people, and books that were fun to read for everyone but had a strong social
point. I feel the YA genre offered me that option.
Lightening Round Questions
What are you reading right now? Or what do you have on your TBR that
you’re dying to read?
I am reading the Warriors series by Erin Hunter. It
was gifted to me by a friend, and yes, I do love cats. I’m also quite the fan
of If Animals Kissed Goodnight by Ann Whitford Paul and Red Wagon by Renata
Liwska (my 16 month old’s favorites).
What Hogwarts House would the Sorting Hat place you in?
That’s a tough one. I feel like it depends on the
day as I switch hats like fifteen times before lunch. But I’d say Ravenclaw -
not for the wisdom, but the wit. I crack myself up.
Twitter or Facebook?
Both.
Favorite Superhero?
She-Ra. I go old school.
Favorite TV show?
I’m not a big TV fan. Gasp. But it’s a tie between
Star Trek Next Generation and Gilmore GIrls.
Sweet or Salty?
Sweetly Salty
Any Phobias?
I’m not a fan of roller coasters. I’m not sure it’s
Phobia level, but it’s close. Flying. I sincerely dislike airplanes, but you
have to do what you have to do sometimes.
Song you can’t get enough of right now?
I’ve got Andra Day’s “Stand up for Something” and
Labrinth’s Jealous going through my head right now.
2018 Movie you’re most looking forward to?
Deadpool 2
Thanks
so much Katarina for answering my questions! I can’t wait for everyone to read
