Three trials stand between Lera and exile. Unless the training kills her first.

Quint magic has never chosen a human before, and the Elders Council is convinced Lera is a mistake.

When the quint refuses to be cleaved apart, the enraged elders give them a choice: exile from Lunos or demotion to the lowest of trainees. Subject again to the humiliations and deadly trials they endured centuries ago, the males now face a new challenge
training Lera to survive.

River, Shade, Coal, and Tye will do whatever it takes to keep Lera safe. But Lera will do whatever she must to keep them together
even if it means putting herself in mortal danger.

Four elite fae warriors. One mortal female. A magical bond they can’t allowor resist.

Orphaned and sold to a harsh master, Lera’s life is about mucking stalls, avoiding her master’s advances, and steering clear of the mystical forest separating the mortal and fae worlds. Only fools venture into the immortal realms, and only dark rumors come out... Until four powerful fae warriors appear at Lera’s barn.

River, Coal, Tye, and Shade have waited a decade for their new fifth to be chosen, the wounds from their quint brother’s loss still raw. But the magic has played a cruel trick, bonding the four immortal warriors to... a female. A mortal female.

Distractingly beautiful and dangerously frail, Lera can only be one thing
a mistake. Yet as the males bring Lera back to the fae lands to sever the bond, they discover that she holds more power over their souls than is safe for anyone... especially for Lera herself.

Power of Five is a full-length reverse-harem fantasy novel.

Excerpt:
Four hours and then we’ll be there. Asking the Elders Council to accept our oath as a quint. My chest tightens, nausea shifting my stomach. If the rest of the Elders Council is anything like Klarissa- the gorgeous, manipulative viper who tried to have me killed- then the five of us are walking into a predator’s open maw.

I’d expected that the decision to remain a quint would bring a calm finality with it. The knot on a braid’s end. It didn’t. If anything the knot is at the braid’s beginning, with the weave still to come. With snags to be untangled along the way.
My head spins as Shade reluctantly sets me on my feet, the enormity of the past quarter hour hitting me as brightly as the light. What in the bloody stars have I done, swearing to be a warrior that I can never become? A shiver runs down my spine. What if we never leave the Citadel, the males trapped here like caged animals because of me?

My body begs me to defend it. Something inside me rises to answer the plea, the sensation so native that I know the something inside me is mine- and yet I”m just as certain that I’ve never felt it before. Don’t even know what it is.

It’s all for me, I realize. The males’ willingness to endure humiliations that should be hundreds of years behind them. To drop to their knees on the hard council floor and accept runes that trap them in a place they despise. My throat constricts, a sense of belonging, of fierce connection, filling my soul. I don’t know how I can ever repay the four warriors for the gift, but I will.

Haunted by the sacrifices he made in Constantinople, Radu is called back to the new capital. Mehmed is building an empire, becoming the sultan his people need. But Mehmed has a secret: as emperor, he is more powerful than ever . . . and desperately lonely. Does this mean Radu can finally have more with Mehmed . . . and would he even want it?

Lada's rule of absolute justice has created a Wallachia free of crime. But Lada won't rest until everyone knows that her country's borders are inviolable. Determined to send a message of defiance, she has the bodies of Mehmed's peace envoy delivered to him, leaving Radu and Mehmed with no choice. If Lada is allowed to continue, only death will prosper. They must go to war against the girl prince.

But Mehmed knows that he loves her. He understands her. She must lose to him so he can keep her safe. Radu alone fears that they are underestimating his sister's indomitable will. Only by destroying everything that came before--including her relationships--can Lada truly build the country she wants.

Claim the throne. Demand the crown. Rule the world.

Now on to the interview!

Hi Kiersten! First I want to say welcome back to Two Chicks on Books! BRIGHT WE BURN was absolutely fantastic and I can’t wait for everyone to read it! And am so happy that you could stop by for a visit!

Thanks for having me!

For the readers: can you tell us a little bit recap of the events leading up to BRIGHT WE BURN and the characters?

While Radu ended up finding a home amidst their Ottoman captors, Lada never abandoned her love of Wallachia and her desire to return and rule it. Binding them both are their complicated feelings for Mehmed, their only childhood friend, now the Sultan and conqueror of Constantinople. With Lada struggling to solidify control of Wallachia and Radu reeling from the repercussions of his actions as a spy behind the walls of Constantinople, they navigate increasingly impossible choices as they face just how far they’re willing to go to reshape the world around themselves.

What are you working on now?

I really miss Lada and Radu, but it’s been fun to live in new worlds after spending so much time in the 15th century! I have a Frankenstein retelling, The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein, coming out September 25th, a Buffy the Vampire Slayer spinoff series starting with Slayer, out January 8th, and a new secret trilogy coming fall 2019! So, basically what I’m saying is I haven’t been working at all, just lounging by the pool and sleeping a lot.

Who was your favorite character to write? What about your least favorite?

I really loved writing Nazira and Nicolae. They were two side characters who each demanded more time on page and I never minded giving it to them. But also I loved writing anyone who challenged Lada. And of course I adore my brutal, vicious, relentlessly ambitious Lada and my tender, yearning, and searching Radu. I traveled so many years and pages with all these characters that I actually don’t have a least favorite!

What is your favorite passage/scene in BRIGHT WE BURN?

The very last line gets me every time. It was so satisfying for me as a writer, and I hope it’s satisfying for the readers who have come on this journey with me.

What kind of research did you have to do for this leg of the series?

With Bright We Burn, I did a tremendous amount of research on the Ottoman attack against Wallachia and the events around it. The creepiest research I had to do, though, focused on the transportation, storage, and display of a tremendous number of

Well. You’ll see.

Who is your ultimate book boyfriend?

I prefer polyamory when it comes to fictional crushes.

What inspired you to write YA?

It was the type of writing I had the most fun reading, so naturally I gravitated to it for writing. I also really adore readers who love YA. Teens and adults alike have so much joy in reading, and are willing to read so widely!

Lightning Round Questions

What are you reading right now? Or what do you have on your TBR that you’re dying to read?

I just finished Muse of Nightmares by Laini Taylor, and it was stunningly good. Of course. I also can’t wait for Alex London’s Black Wings Beating to come out so I can shove it in everyone’s faces. It’s fun and fresh and contains really fraught, twisted sibling dynamics, so, right up my ally!

What Hogwarts House would the Sorting Hat place you in?

As an eleven-year-old, Ravenclaw. As an adult, Slytherin.

Twitter.

When fifteen-year-old Chloe mysteriously disappears, the rumors at Grammaire Hall point to murder, but spiritual entrapment isn’t the same as dead. In a library that’s believed to be nothing more than a myth, Chloe's spirit is separated from her body after witnessing another student's murder. Try as she may she can't remember what happened to her before she woke up as a spirit in the campus graveyard. As Chloe uncovers clues leading to the mythical library's location and her body, a secret the Magical Parliament doesn't want to get out, starts to unravel. Rogue sorcerers have infiltrated the school, intent on reinstating the Third Edict, and sorcery students are dying because of it. Destroyed long ago for horrific crimes against humanity, the return of the Third Edict would spell disaster for both magical and magicless societies. To prevent her own demise and the fulfillment of the Third Edict’s return, Chloe must find a way to reunite body and soul without giving the rogue sorcerers the weapon they need to succeed, a weapon only Chloe can activate.
Now on to the interview!

Hey Lynn!! First I want to say welcome to Two Chicks on Books I’m glad you could stop by for a chat! CHLOE SHIPTON & THE QUILL OF LEFAY sounds AWESOME and I can’t wait for everyone to read it!

For the readers: can you tell us a little bit about CHLOE SHIPTON & THE QUILL OF LEFAY and the characters?

Hi, and it is great to be here. Oh my goodness where to start! Well The Quill of LeFay is a story that takes place in the remotest part of the Swiss Alps at Grammaire Hall, a school for young sorcerers and sorceresses! Sorcery is just one of the Magical Religions, practices, if you will in this story’s fictional universe.  I could sit here all day and go on and on about the magic system, so I will try to cut it short and leave it at this: One central magical parliament controls two edicts that govern the magical world, the Spiritum Edict and the Elementa Edict. Each edict rules five unique orders of magic. Magic students do not get to pick their Order of magic but rather are born into it.

What are you working on now?

My current W.I.P. list consists of 3 novels; actually one just got completed back in early March and is entitled Eden’s Echo. It is a finalist in the Elevation of Love Contest hosted by the CIMRWA Chapter of the RWA! I’m excited.  The second novel in production is Chloe Shipton & the Witches of Calvary Hall and the third is the third installment to my debut novel, Pinnacle. It is called Noctis. Eximius which is the second installment will be released September 18th by Astraea Press!

Were any of the characters in the book inspired by people from your real life?

Yes as a matter of fact! Chloe is inspired by my 12 year old daughter Ashlie! She is a huge Harry potter fan and when she finished reading the series she came to me and said she wanted me to write something in the same vein with a female protagonist, who starts out older, but looks and acts like she does! Thus Chloe Shipton was born!

Who was your favorite character to write? What about your least favorite?

I love all my characters, and tell them I do not have favorites. But between you and I I loved writing Zanthus, and Sophie pulled a very close second.

What is your favorite passage/scene in CHLOE SHIPTON & THE QUILL OF LEFAY?

By default I am a very descriptive writer, possibly too much for the YA Genre so I really have to rein myself in on description, but this one slipped by because it was one of the darlings I just couldn’t kill, it’s a bit lengthy, I hope that’s okay.

Feeling depressed with the whole situation, I crossed to the arched window overlooking the courtyard directly below. I gazed into the distance, past the graveyard with its bare-bone oaks and carpet of red, yellow, and orange. The tree’s fallen autumn leaves lay nestled between quiet markers of marbled stone. I was drowning in the possibility of never being whole again. The idea of it clawed at me until I felt like I might suffocate with my fear. In an attempt to level my emotions, I let my wandering eyes focus on the snowcapped mountains in the distance. They formed the natural barrier around the magically concealed valley where Grammaire Hall was built. Their majestic peaks were highlighted in the blue and purple shades of early dawn. I watched the morning birds take flight across the sky as it transitioned to softer tints of pink. The slow-burning pink finally lightened to peach, and then the heavens gave way to the vibrant yellow that marked the opening of a new day. It gave me hope that maybe something of use would be unearthed before the moon rose again. The sun’s greedy fingers traveled across the valley extinguishing the long shadows of night as they sped across the land. The curtain of darkness continued to diminish as morning approached the tower. Laying siege to the foundation, the bright aura of day crept up the outer walls of my dorm. Up it climbed until it spilled through the window in a blinding cascade of radiance. With the coming of daylight, I knew I’d fizzled from the sight of mortal eyes as the sun engulfed my soul in its ancient warmth.

What kind of research did you have to do for the story?

A lot of cultural research went into this novel because of the different countries that Grammaire Hall services, ( Most of western Europe and even as far east as Russia.)The only one that didn’t take a bit of research was French Culture, mostly because I am half French and already familiar with it.

Who is your ultimate book boyfriend?

Oh my goodness! You are making me blush! Hands down, Daris. Now everyone is wondering who on earth that is! I tend to read not so main stream (and Mainstream) novels. This gorgeous hunk is from a novel by Victoria Basnuevo entitled Marked by Time. He is believable, relatable and completely fleshed out! I love him ! He’s the type of book boyfriend that keeps you up crying at night because no matter how bad you wish he was real, you knowdeep down, way deep downhes not.

What inspired you to write YA?

Kiddos, children, offspring,  loves of my lifedid I mention I was talking about my kids.
