The thrilling second installment in the Shadow Watch series!

The Shadow Watch has been undone. Their captain lies in the dungeons of the White Citadel, and the Gallows Girl has disappeared. Most of the surviving Watchers have joined the chancellor's new magical army, the Sky Guard, led by Darien Redvar, but the Gallows Boy is shaken from the return of the monsters of the Old World, and he must soon choose, once and for all, where his loyalties lie.

Tori and Mischa trek to the Great White North with an Alyut shaman, who believes Tori is the one who will bring Restoration to his people. A resistance is growing in the North, but Tori may not be the god the people are looking for, and the price of revolution may cost Tori her heart as well as her life.

Meanwhile, another threat grows in strength. Old World monsters are rising up across the New World, and no one knows how they've returned. As nations ready themselves for a magical war, their return threatens to change everything.

New alliances are set in place, new friendships are forged, new loves kindled. But no one is safe, for there can be no war without betrayal.

Don't miss this the latest installment in the epic fantasy series readers are comparing to Mistborn and Throne of Glass!

Now on to the interview

Hey S.A.!! First I want to say welcome to Two Chicks on Books Im glad you could stop by for a chat! THE SHADOW WATCH SERIES sounds AWESOME and I cant wait for everyone to read it!

For the readers: can you tell us a little bit about the THE SHADOW WATCH SERIES and the characters?
The Shadow Watch series is about the return of magic and monsters to a world that has eradicated those things in order to create a better society after an ancient magical war that left the world in shambles. Magic is forbidden, so when Tori, the main character, reveals magic in a defiant act against her ruler, it shakes up the order of things.
The story centers around Tori and her best friend, Darien, who end up on opposing sides of a magical war. It is full of complex characters who often must face extremely difficult choices, and these often have disastrous consequences for the other characters. There’s action, love, monsters, political intrigue, and lots of twists and turns.
If you like the Throne of Glass series or Leigh Bardguo’s Grishaverse, I think you will enjoy these books.

How many more books are planned for the series?
Two books down, and I am planning on four total.

Were any of the characters in the book inspired by people from your real life?
No, not really. I’m sure all of them were influenced by people I know in some small way, but I never have a specific person in mind when I create a character.

Who was your favorite character to write? What about your least favorite?
I loved writing Kale’s perspective in Book One. Tori’s perspective, ironically, was more difficult. I had to try harder to get inside her head and so it was more work. But in Book Two, her perspective was a lot easier, although I probably enjoyed Darien’s perspective the most in that book.

What is your favorite passages/scenes in THE SHADOW WATCH SERIES?
My favorite scenes are probably when Tori and Darien clash. You never know what’s going to happen when those two collide. Also, any scene with the chancellor is pretty exciting!

What kind of research did you have to do for the story?
I researched quite a bit about battle formations and strategies (particularly when muskets came into the world), some nautical terminology, types of swords and armor, and ancient methods for impalement (gruesome, I know!). I also studied real and fictional maps in order to inform the world I was creating.

Who is your ultimate book villain?
I love people who are not quite good or bad, like Jaime Lannister from A Song of Ice and Fire, who started out as a villain and became one of my favorite characters by the end of the third book. I also love villains who have a seductive quality, like the Darkling from the Grisha trilogy or Mrs. Coulter from The Golden Compass.

What inspired you to write YA?
I really love YA stories. I think because it’s such an interesting and complicated period of life. I felt a lot of angst in my teenage years, but I also look back on them fondly. You’re figuring out what you actually think and believe, and how you fit into the world. You still have hopes and dreams, and you feel everything passionately. Too many adults have forgotten what it’s like to dream, and to feel, and to question things. And I think that is the true power of YA stories.

Lightning Round Questions

What are you reading right now? Or what do you have on your TBR that youre dying to read?
I am re-reading Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix right now, and it is still so good!

Next on the list is Oathbringer by Brandon Sanderson. I absolutely LOVE his Stormlight Archive.

What Hogwarts House would the Sorting Hat place you in?
I am basically a dead tie between Slytherin and Gryffindor, haha!

Twitter or Facebook?
Twitter

Favorite Superhero?
Wolverine

Favorite TV show?
LOST

Sweet or Salty?
Totally depends on the day

Any Phobias?
I am pretty irrationally paranoid about forgetting to lock doors, whether my house or car. I’ll triple check sometimes, haha!

Song you cant get enough of right now?
The Silence by Manchester Orchestra

2019 Movie youre most looking forward to?
Avengers Endgame; but if we’re counting TV shows, then the final season of Game of Thrones would come before that.

Thanks so much S.A. for answering my questions! I cant wait for everyone to read THE SHADOW WATCH SERIES!
