Two Chicks Interview

Hey Ladies!! First I want to say welcome to Two Chicks on Books I’m glad you could stop by for a chat! WOUNDED HEROES ANTHOLOGY sounds AWESOME and I can’t wait for everyone to read it!

For the readers: can you tell us a little bit about the WOUNDED HEROES ANTHOLOGY and the characters?

Pam: Rosa and Russell were originally introduced in my novel, Garrett’s Ghost. They had a story needing to be told. It was fun. It’s been a long time since I’ve written any Civil War stories.

Debra: My story in the anthology, Two Step New Steps, features Leanne Bobbin, a recent college graduate newly hired to be a bank assistant manager. Her new boyfriend, an Air Force veteran and Bartlett cop, is on desk duty healing from an injury when the bank she works at is robbed. Leanne was also the sister in Check Out, a military romantic suspense set in Bartlett, TN where I live. Leanne had a college campus stalker in Check Out.

Teri: A detective working on a sex trafficking case is sent to rescue his ex. Tommy, the hero, is an Alpha who based a major life changing decision on his need to protect his woman. Jessica, my heroine, is hurt that Tommy disappeared from her life without explaining why. When he shows up to rescue her, she’s not sure she can trust him again.

What are you working on now?

Pam: I’m working on my Pambling Roads Journals (U.S. States), and creating a group of short stories all revolving around Clere’s Restaurant.

Debra: I’m working on To Catch an Elf (release date Dec. 22nd, which has a creepy elf and a stalker, a heroine who is a house sitter who is also dog sitting and air force hero Ted Barr, who is the twin of Jack Barr, the hero of Montana Marine, and the hero of A Triple C Ranch Christmas Wedding (release date Dec. 3^rd).

Teri: -A paranormal (my first) about 3 sisters with psychic abilities.

Maggie: A Feisty Heroines anthology with other NY Times and USA Today authors. Why should the guys have all the fun. 

Nia: I’m working on More (Avenging Angels Book 5) by Nia Farrell, Casey (Guarded Hearts Book 2) by Nia Farrell and Claire Marta, and world-building for a dystopian MC that I’ll be writing for the Twisted Steel anthology out next year.

Were any of the characters in the book inspired by people from your real life?

Pam: No. I avoid doing that. Although I have based characters from parts of some people’s personalities.

Debra: All of the officers in the Bartlett Police Department inspired me to write my first police hero, Len Yardley in the short story Two Step, New Steps. He is also an Air Force veteran and my husband is also.

Maggie: In a way. My brother-in-law was a federal agent, a marine, who died unexpectedly.  I knew my characters grief from my sister-in-law’s sorrow. 

Nia: Father Vincent’s visionary experience was inspired by a true story. Something similar happened to a man when visiting Normandy Beach, where he received his calling to be an Army chaplain.  Father Vincent experiences his epiphany on a Civil War battlefield.

Who was your favorite character to write? What about your least favorite?

Pam: I adored Russell. He refused to give up or give in to the injustices happening around him.

Debra: My least favorites were the bank robbers and my favorite in this story was Len. He’s a good cop.

Teri: Jessica. I love writing strong female characters.

Maggie: Favorite - Dixie from my debut novel, Whistlin’ Dixie.  Least - Marcus Davis from Cold as Ice. His cold, villainous character was almost snakelike. 

Nia: Fallen only has two on-screen character, but Father Vincent’s tortured soul was more demanding as a writer. Ilsa had her own issues, but his involved a crisis of faith.

What is your favorite passages/scenes in WOUNDED HEROES ANTHOLOGY?

Pam: When Rosa and Russell first met. (Russell is severely injured and in a POW hospital)

She scoffed. “You’re a big flirt. Trying to sweeten me up, aren’t you?”

He winked. “What’s your name, lass?”

“Rosa.”

“Well, I’ll be a monkey’s uncle. A Rosa for Russell.”

Debra: “Hands up!” the one with the red tennis shoes screamed and shot his gun once into the air, hitting the ceiling tile.

          “Everyone get down on the ground!” the other one yelled.

          Leanne, in the office, had turned toward them, frozen in shock, where they hadn’t seen her yet.

          Bang.

She jumped, dropping the paperwork onto the floor as she slid around behind the filing cabinet hoping they wouldn’t see her or find her.

Maggie: In my story, I love the in-your-face attitude of Lizzie when she confronts Tank.

Nia: I had four relatives who were POWs at Andersonville prison, so Pam’s story really resonated for me. But I kept going back to how much Father Ralph in The Thorn Birds and hoped that readers would find Father Vincent as compelling.

What kind of research did you have to do for the story?

Pam: I did a lot of research on the Andersonville Civil War POW camp in Georgia. We also toured the site and spoke with the employees there. I picked their brains and got as much information as possible.

Debra: I worked as a head teller at a bank in the 80’s so I pulled from that and from attending the Bartlett Citizens Police Academy in 2018. I live in Bartlett, TN where the story is set.

Teri: I spent a lot of time researching the Russian Mafia.

Maggie: Rankings and military protocol was the most research I did. 

Nia: My brother is a retired Army major but I had to research the priesthood and Army chaplains, look at Army bases, and determine the best choice for my story. Georgia summertime and a vintage church building with faulty air conditioning raised the heat level before a word was spoken.

Who is your ultimate book boyfriend?

Debra: Usually the current hero I am writing.

Teri: Roark from the In Death series.

Maggie: Nick from Cold as Ice.  He’s dominant, stubborn, sarcastic and charming, all 

at the same time. 

Nia: Mr. Darcy, written as a Dominant in my book Pride and Punishment—An Erotic Retelling of Jane Austen’s Beloved Classic. I’m an Austen fan, to the point of naming our daughter Darcy.

What inspired you to write romance?

Pam: I’ve written time travel science fiction for over twenty years. My books have relationships in them but never really had romance. This was my dabble into the world of romance stories, and I enjoyed it very much. All of my books have a promise of a better tomorrow and are about hope. Perfect for writing romance!

Debra: I love happy-ever-after endings.

Teri: It’s what I love to read.

Maggie: I’ve been married to my high school sweetheart for 35 years.  I kinda like our love story and wanted to share it.

Nia: My husband. I was an avid reader when he encouraged me to write. Now I have nearly 60 titles under four names, plus a documentary screenplay.

Lightning Round Questions

What are you reading right now? Or what do you have on your TBR that you’re dying to read?

Pam: My next book on my TBR is Breaking Free of the Pieces by Shelby Reeves.

Debra: The 12 Cozy Mystery Carols of Christmas – there are 12 different authors and all but one is new to me.

Teri: Twisted Twenty-Six by Janet Evanovich. Shamed by Linda Castillo is next on my list.

Maggie: Morgan by Nia Farrell

Nia: I have a ton of titles on my Kindle. Latest book read was Vargr by Cari Silverwood. The next are must-reads for research—some steampunk titles and the complete works of Edgar Allen Poe.

What Hogwarts House would the Sorting Hat place you in?

Pam: Ravenclaw

Debra: Gryffindor

Maggie: I’d like to say Gryffindor but probably Hufflepuff. Lol

Pam: Not really, I’m not comfortable around large crowds or large groups of people.

Debra: Deep water/drowning

Teri: Heights

Maggie: I’m terrified of heights, deep water, and close spaces.

Nia: Not really.

Teri: Go Rest High On That Mountain

Maggie: Christmas songs!!

Nia: I listen to more classical music. Vivaldi, Beethoven, and William Boyce are favorites.

2019/2020 Movie you’re most looking forward to?

Debra: Minions 2 – I love those little yellow guys!

Maggie: Frozen II

Nia: Our last film was Downton Abbey. Our next will be A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood. Sadly, I’m behind on the Star Wars franchise.
