Books I’m glad you could stop by for a chat! WRONG BED, RIGHT BROTHER sounds
AWESOME and I can’t wait for everyone to read it!

For the readers: can
you tell us a little bit about WRONG BED, RIGHT BROTHER and the characters?
Amanda is a video
game designer (zombies!!!) who’s been crushing on her coworker Luke for years.
He’s moving to L.A., so it’s do or die for Amanda to make her move. On a
weekend getaway with friends, she slips into his bed at night and things get
hot and heavy… And then the lights come on, and she discovers she’s been getting
half naked with Luke’s twin brother, Noah!
Noah is a running
coach, and Amanda’s always seen him as a total pain in the butt. The two have
never gotten along, and they vow to keep their late-night mix-up a secret.
Trouble is, they keep coming back for more. It’s a story about being
surprised—by yourself, by others, and by love itself. And about taking risks,
knowing your heart, and figuring out what you *actually* want—not just what you
think you’re supposed to.
What are you working
on now?
WRONG BED, RIGHT
BROTHER Is the fourth book in my Accidental Love series, all of which feature
wrong bed mix-ups. Each book stands alone and readers can pick them up in any
order, but this is the last book in the series and I’m so excited to have them
all out in the world! It’s been a ton of fun to hang out with this group of
friends through all their shenanigans, but I’m looking forward to taking a breath
before diving into the next manuscript. I have some things up my sleeve for a new
series… I’d also love to explore some shorter novellas. I think Luke needs his
own story!
Were any of the
characters in the book inspired by people from your real life?
This is probably the
book I’ve written with characters who are the most different from me and from
what my real life is like, but I’m sure parts of my life sneaked in anyway. I
spent like eight years wearing only Doc Martens, which are Amanda’s boot of
choice. I love running around the Central Park Reservoir, which is where Noah
does most of his coaching. I thought about people I know who work in fitness
and what motivates them, and how I could translate that onto the page. Amanda
and Noah are both characters who seem to have it super together on the outside,
but on the inside are working through their own insecurities and uncertainties,
just like everybody else. I think a lot of us can relate!
Who was your favorite
character to write? What about your least favorite?
I loved writing both
Amanda and Noah and discovering more about them as the story unfolds. Amanda
appears in the three other WRONG BED books, always as a friend and supporting
character. I kept dropping breadcrumbs in the other books about her crush on
her coworker, even as I knew she was going to wind up in bed with his twin
brother instead. But for all those early books, I still didn’t really know who
she was. I loved giving her my full attention and letting her personality come
forth.
I also didn’t know
anything about Noah before I started writing, beyond the fact that he was “the
other twin” and a runner. It was so fun figuring out what makes him tick and
thinking about why he and Amanda hate each other in the beginning—and why
they’re so perfect for each other by the end.
The hardest part was
getting Luke’s character exactly right. He has to be likeable enough that we
get why Amanda’s friends with him and has been crushing on him. But he’s not
the hero, so he can’t overshadow the main characters—even though can’t be
one-dimensional, either. It was a tricky balancing act, but I found myself
really understanding him by the end and loving how he, too, grows and develops
throughout the story.
What is your favorite
passages/scenes in WRONG BED, RIGHT BROTHER?
I LOVE the scene
where they realize they’re about to sleep with the wrong person. I had that
scene in mind from the very beginning, even when I didn’t know anything else
about the book. This group of friends rents a house outside NYC for a long
weekend getaway. Amanda sneaks into what she thinks is Noah’s room, not
realizing the twins have changed bedrooms for the night. It’s dark, she crawls
into the bed, sexiness ensues, and then the lights come on… It’s funny and
horrible and she and Noah are trying to be mad at each other but they’re both
still turned on out of their minds and trying to hide it… No matter how many
times I’ve re-read that scene working on the book, it still makes me giddy.
I also love some of
the later scenes, where they start to open up to each other outside the
bedroom. There’s one scene where they go out to brunch somewhat unexpectedly
and start talking about what they were like in high school and how they wound
up in New York. I love seeing them evolve as individuals and start to grow
toward each other. There’s always that shift when the romance deepens, and I
look forward to writing that scene every time.
What kind of research
did you have to do for the story?
I interviewed a
running coach and did my best to get a sense of what it’s like to have that job,
especially in NYC. I wanted to get the details right, like Noah’s work
schedule, what he actually does as a coach, what his role is on race
day, etc. But I also had to learn about how that job shapes him as a person.
What motivates him? What does he love about running? What would he miss if he
weren’t coaching? How does it reflect not only his drive and commitment, but
also his vulnerabilities and his fears? The more I talked to runners, the more
I came to see all the dimensions that makes Noah such a great hero—strong,
caring, committed, and kind.
I also know nothing
about video games, and especially about how it actually works to have a job in
the gaming world. I did a bunch of research into indie game companies, what the
company structure and office culture would be like, and what Amanda’s
day-to-day would look like. I needed to figure out her schedule, and there’s a
key office scene that I won’t spoil, but let’s just say I needed to get
creative to make it work!
Who is your ultimate
book boyfriend?
I’m so bad, I always
want whoever I’m reading in that moment! Ford Cooper in WHITEOUT if I need to
save my life. Cunnilingus Gabe in TAKING THE HEAT, for obvious reasons. :)
What inspired you to
write romance?
I came to the genre later
than many fans. In graduate school, I wrote my dissertation on the romance plot
in contemporary feminist science fiction. Somewhere in there, I felt like I
should probably read a romance novel. From my first Anne Calhoun, I was hooked!
I’d always wanted to be a novelist but didn’t know how to make my way into the
(daunting) task of writing a novel. But I fell in love with the feminism and
depth and variety of contemporary romance and found myself full of ideas. I’d
dabbled in writing other novels, but my debut romance, ABOVE ALL, was the first
novel where the whole idea appeared in my head and I knew I could do it.
Finishing that first draft was like finding a home I didn’t even know I’d been
missing.
