From the bestselling author of THE CHOCOLATIER'S WIFE:

Every day, Lady Avriel hears the bards sing about the greatest love story of all times, a heartbreaking romance between a human nobleman, Captain Edward de Vere, and the beautiful Queen of the Fae, who shattered his heart when she abandoned him to accept her throne. Avriel secretly longs for the sad and romantic captain as she works as a double agent, serving at both human and fae courts to keep the peace between the two kingdoms.

But for three hours every night she remembers a completely different world, where the greatest love story is a lie, and Edward belongs to her. She believes this reality to be the true one, even if no one else does. The world has fallen under a spell, and it is up to Avriel to find its source and undo it.

To set things right, Avriel must face the all-powerful Elder Fae and confront the darkest powers that rule her destiny – only to learn that if she proceeds, her actions will bring chaos and open her kingdom to destruction. Is this a choice she is willing to make to bring her love back?

Excerpt:
Prologue.

I am the queen of sometimes. Sometimes I am a wife. Sometimes I am a spy. It just depends on what time of day you catch me.

There is a story that sits in the back of my head, and I remind myself of it every time I lie down to sleep. It is the story that recounts everything I had, and everything I lost. It is not the story you know, about war and love. You believe in the tale of Catherine of the Willows, a part-fae who fell in love with Edward de Vere, Captain of the King’s Guards. You already are nodding, you know the story like you know your own face in the mirror. It’s been told to you thousands of times. Catherine and Edward fell in love. They married despite their love being forbidden. And then, when the story should have ended with everyone having their happily ever after, the unthinkable happened. Catherine was chosen to take the fae throne. And with that, came a terrible decision. She could keep her mundane life, her marriage, or she could sacrifice her identity and become the Sapphire Queen of the Fae.

She sacrificed. And as she rose, Edward fell. Tossed aside, he became the tragic hero.

Here is the truth, if you would have it. There were three men who were like brothers: an inventor, a pirate, a romantic; warriors all. And there was a woman, Avriel, neither all fae nor all human, and she lived between the worlds of the human and fae courts. Avriel was the one who enchanted Edward, Avriel was the one he wed, and everything should have been the happily ever after of the stories: flowers and sunshine and perfection.

So why don’t you remember it this way? I don’t know. No one remembers. They know of these three men – Edward de Vere, and Merrick d’Marison, and Stephan d’Valerian, and all the things they did. They sometimes remember the woman – me, Avriel, now a background character in a much grander story. But no one remembers the truth. In one brief moment everything’s changed, and I do not know how, or why.

All I know is that Edward, my husband and the love of my life, does not remember who I am. But that is not as bad as it would seem. For, you see, except for three blessed hours each day, from nine until midnight, I don’t remember him, either. Or, to be more precise, I don’t remember that he was once mine. He’s just an attractive soldier who once was the Captain of the King’s Guard but now fell from grace, and all I can do is hide in the shadows and long for him.

Each time the clock chimes nine, I remember what it was like to taste his kisses, to have him lean close and whisper in my ear, to fight by his side. I remember what it was like to be powerful and in control of my destiny, to have friends who respected me.

It used to hurt, the remembering. At first it would paralyze me. I used to think I was mad. I would sit in my room and stare at the wall, wondering what to do. There was no one to talk to, to turn to. Everyone had been taken from me.

Oh, I cannot lie. It still does hurt. But I force it away, and instead I consider the day behind me, and the day ahead of me, and I take out some paper and write down some notes. They are different, depending on what needs to be accomplished. I place each note where I will see it in the morning, out of sight of the mirror, because there is a fae courtier who controls me, who can see through mirrors, and who would not allow me to proceed.

One step at a time. We will solve this. I will have my life back.

About Cindy Lynn Speer:

Cindy Lynn Speer is the author of several short stories, book reviews, books and interviews.

And she finds talking in the third person boring, so...

Hello! Let's see, what else is interesting? I write for many reasons...to make people happy, to explore further the worlds in my head (day dreaming can be sloppy...and jumpy. One moment, you're at a stop light, day dreaming about riding dragons, the next moment you're at work, pretending that you're a CSI specializing in filing systems. Not a very disciplined way of seeing stories through to the end.) and to just celebrate the joy of words.

My library contains books on ships, chocolate, swords, murder mysteries, folk lore, myth, fantasy and all sorts of things. I am a jackdaw. I love to read about a lot of different things.

Do not read this book.

No, seriously, I have absolutely no idea why one was even written about my life. This is ridiculous. Not only did I live in the middle of nowhere in a drug infested town, under the roof of a trailer that was literally collapsing on itself... but nothing, and I mean, nothing interesting has ever happened to me. Well, unless you counted being abandoned outside of a motel, picked up by my new foster father that was always too high to remember my name, or spending the last six years traveling the United States practically homeless. Oh! Let's not forget to include the jerk that I really needed to break up with because let's face it... he had actually started to scare me. A lot.

I'd spent the last six years of my life feeling horribly out of place. Feeling like I was not only in a time that didn't fit me but in a place that was so lackluster that I had issues believing it was real. So when I tell you not to read this book? I mean it.

There is nothing of interest in here. I promise.

Well, I suppose there was one memorable and interesting moment in my recent past… the night of my eighteenth birthday. You know, the one where my four hot neighbors, and known criminals, kidnapped me onto a river boat. You could say I was confused when I found myself falling asleep floating down a Missouri river... and waking up to marmalade skies and a talking river otter with a hot pink top hat. None of that confusion though compared to when my four psycho kidnappers made me remember everything I'd forgotten.

Because I had been right, I didn't fucking belong here.

I belonged in the Kingdom of Snark.

This book is anything but sensible. Time for Sensibility is a standalone reverse harem romance that is fast-burn with violence, swearing, a band of hot psychos, a wonderland inspired world, and a haunted slightly naive MFC. Abuse is mentioned. +18 audience.

Excerpt:
I wasn’t positive what it was about these men, but they made me feel grounded. More myself, a stronger version of myself. I didn’t think nor could have predicted that my new grounded nature would include an acceptance of homicide…but in this situation it seemed like the most sensible shit that I’d heard all year. Or maybe I was just goddamn insane, and that felt more real than not to me.

When Preston had first told me, I’d been freaked out.

I’d been caught up on the concept of them killing someone in general, not specifically Wade. Then I realized I was only upset because I felt like I ‘should’ be upset and since I wasn’t, I’d felt guilty.
Now though? Well, what was done was done… and frankly, I had always been aware of what they were capable of. I’d heard the rumors about how dangerous they were. Plus, the motherfucker had left bruises on me. That wasn’t fucking okay.

Movement pulled me from my thoughts, my head snapping over to Ranger and Lorenzo as they exited the trailer.

The sky above us was thundering, but no rain fell on the guys, their smiles really fucking big for having just murdered someone. It was sort of hot.

I was starting to understand why I had never been attracted to anyone else before them. I was very clearly into serial killers. I should have known, considering how much I loved watching documentaries about that shit.

Ranger was covered in blood as he stripped off his shirt, the man preferring to be shirtless far more than clothed, I had gathered, and dropped it on the pavement before running his bloody hands through his hair, tinting it with crimson. Lorenzo, on the other hand, had just rolled his sleeve up, hiding the singular stain of blood. Damn, they were so different from each other.

I had the urge to know what it would be like between them. I felt like the way they fucked would be so dangerously different, and I craved that. I just craved them. Alright, I possibly had a problem.

Interview
Hey Alice!! First I want to say welcome to Two Chicks on Books I’m glad you could stop by for a chat! A YEAR IN HER LIFE sounds AWESOME and I can’t wait for everyone to read it!
Thanks so much!!  Alice

For the readers: can you tell us a little bit about the A YEAR IN HER LIFE and the characters?
Bonnie is a young woman, engaged and passionate about her new job, her feminist ideals, and her friends. Bonnie is also single and looking for a soulmate. A large part of the book is focused on Bonnie’s search for love and her choices, both healthy and unhealthy.  Her last boyfriend dumped her after she supported him through law school. Her new boyfriend is nice, but a little boring and they’re not attuned politically. Then Bonnie meets Jane. She’s a little older, experienced, and compelling. They share a commitment to feminism and social justice. Unfortunately, Jane is married. Still, Bonnie finds her attraction growing. She denies it because Jane is off limits, but Bonnie is fascinated by Jane and determined to find out if the attraction is mutual.
What are you working on now?
Right now, I’m working on my third novel, and I’m almost finished with the first draft. This book explores relationships between mothers and daughters and grandmothers and granddaughters. I don’t have a daughter, but I do have two granddaughters, so it’s been pretty illuminating to write about these types of connections. I’m also working on a short story inspired by Covid and issues with masks.
Were any of the characters in the book inspired by people from your real life?
Often my characters are composites of a variety of people from my life. Bonnie’s relationships with Vickie and Linda reflect the close friendships I have with a number of women who have supported me through struggles and challenges over the years. Nancy, Bonnie’s boss at Transitions House, is based on my boss when I worked in a domestic violence shelter. My boss was as kind, caring, and compassionate as Nancy is. Fortunately, Jane is completely made-up.
Who was your favorite character to write? What about your least favorite?
Bonnie was my favorite character to write, although I did get a little frustrated with her. Bonnie is pretty self-involved, but at the same time, she’s constantly striving to be better, and I liked that about her. I sometimes got a little frustrated with her, because she had such a hard time making up her mind about Larry. Also, it took Bonnie a very long time to face up to the fact that her relationship with Jane was not at all good for her. Bonnie also smoked a lot and drank a lot of wine. I always say that Bonnie smoked a lot of cigarettes for me, because I had to quit.
I was planning to write that Jane was my least favorite, because she was so mean and manipulative, but in some ways, that was really fun and cathartic to write. Jane got to do things that I would never do, and I guess that’s a good thing. We don’t want to spend time with cruel people, but they make for more interesting stories. Maybe that means I don’t have a least favorite. J
What is your favorite passages/scenes in A YEAR IN HER LIFE?
My favorites scenes in the book are the conversations Bonnie has with her friends. I loved writing those, and I still love to read them. I tried to reflect the love and caring and support inherent in deeply-held friendships.
What kind of research did you have to do for the story?
I didn’t have to do much formal research. I worked in a domestic violence program for about thirteen years, so I’m familiar with many of their ins and outs. I did have to check on current laws and programs, because things have changed in the sixteen years since I left. Because the story is set in 2016, I didn’t have to do much historical research. We all lived through it. I did have to Google some specific events to refresh my memory, so that real incidents were placed in the appropriate time frame.
Who is your ultimate book boyfriend?
I have always had a thing for Alex Delaware from the mystery series written by Jonathon Kellerman. Alex is smart and determined and, from his description, very cute. He’s pretty intense, loyal, and loving.
What inspired you to write contemporary?
Contemporary is what I like to read, and writing about relatively current events comes more naturally to me. I can use the writing to explore issues and themes that I’m thinking about every day. When I see a news story, I can use the writing to explore what would that incident would feel like for me or how would I react to it. Also, contemporary seemed to be the best genre to tell the story I wanted to tell. Writing a contemporary novel allowed me to tell the story that was in my head, one that reflects reality, but is ultimately, a story that is fiction, one that I made up. I could play with events and characters and have things happen in such a way to control the outcome that best suited the integrity of the book I was writing.

Lightning Round Questions

What are you reading right now? Or what do you have on your TBR that you’re dying to read?
I belong to three book groups. We’re reading How To Be An Antiracist by Ibram X. Kendi in one of them, and the book is a great explanation of racist ideas and thinking, as well as a fascinating memoir. It’s sparking some very interesting discussions. I also just finished The Night Watchman by Louise Erdrich which is a powerful, beautifully-written novel.
Instagram, Twitter or Facebook?
As many writers do, I find marketing and self-promotion challenging. I think Twitter is my favorite platform, because I’ve found so many supportive writers in the Twitter community.

Favorite Superhero?
Shuri from the Black Panther.
Favorite TV show?
The Great British Baking Show
Sweet or Salty?
Both/Combo. I love chocolate covered peanuts or kettle corn with butter.
Any Phobias?
Just the usual ones – spiders and snakes. And, while it’s not exactly a phobia, I do hate to fly.
Song you can’t get enough of right now?
Rain on Me
2020 Movie you’re most looking forward to?
Wonder Woman 1984

Thanks so much Alice for answering my questions! I can’t wait for everyone to read A YEAR IN HER LIFE!

Thank you! These are great questions. Please let me know if you have questions or need further information. This was so fun. Alice
