“Your work is very very important for kids. There is no wonder that you received a pre-launch 5 star review from "Readers’ Favorite"– Majd Mashharawi (Founder of Materials Engineering Startup)

"Reading is for everyone and can help you achieve your own dream it and do it dreams--whatever they might be!"- Dawn Wacek librarian featured on Ted Talk®

"I believe that young girls need to see role models in all professions, and young boys need to see women in these roles as well. While growing up, I wish I had the advice and vision this book offers to young people"- Rochelle Jones (one of FDNY’s first female firefighters)

Dream of Writing Books

Like

Jacqueline Woodson

Writers have a super power. They can do something that no one else can. They can transport you from a cozy chair in your living room to far off worlds. They can introduce you to people so real, you feel as though you have always known them.

Jacqueline understood this power at a young age. She would tell her friends “story-lies” and watch their faces light up because they believed her tales. The power of storytelling took over her life and she would write stories all over the place. Sometimes, grownups wouldn’t appreciate the places she chose to document her stories, like the side of a building. But this didn’t stop her. She kept on writing.

When she was in elementary school she started submitting the stories that she wrote. She won an award for one of the first stories she shared. That is when she realized that while lies told out loud get you in trouble, lies told on paper win you awards. Make-believe is acceptable when they’re written storytelling.

Jacqueline kept reading and writing as she grew. Her first book was about the friendship of two eleven-year-old girls and the struggle of growing up. Someone heard her story at a public reading and loved it so much that they helped her to sell it.

As a writer, Jacqueline wants her writing to help people have conversations about the world. She uses her super power to help people feel less alone. Her stories are about situations that people experience but have a hard time talking about.

One book called The Day You Begin is about being new and different. People, especially young people, feel different for lots of reasons. Because people are different from each other, there will always be something that makes us feel like we don’t belong. Jacqueline uses her story to make people who feel different realize that many people feel this way. She reflects on the lessons of her own life and encourages readers to “tell your story” and to help others understand you better. This will help you feel a little less different.

Jacqueline writes books for people of all ages with the goal of using her stories and characters to help make the world a more open and understanding place. She says, “Books give people a place to go to begin a conversation. Books help us to get us to talk and take the fear out of hard conversations.”

Jacqueline believes that good writing starts with a lot of reading. She credits her love of writing to the hours she would spend in her room reading, even when she could hear the laughter of her friends playing outside in the street. If you think writing books could be a career that you are interested in, push yourself to read as many different types of books as possible. Ask your teacher or librarian for advice on advanced books that will introduce you to topics, like the ones in Jacqueline’s books, that make you think and have challenging conversations.

About Holly:

Sharp spent the bulk of her career in new product development—dreaming up intuitive ideas from how to kill bugs to new ice cream forms to hit grocery shelves. A self-proclaimed problem-solver, she loves to think about the things that the world needs and figuring out how to make those things come to life. “Knowing in high school what I wanted to do with my life set me up for the right path. I wanted the same for my child and searched for books to guide her, but came up short,” Sharp said. “That’s when I thought, ‘why not write the book for my child that she needs and that will also help others?”
