Long before the Clone Wars, the Empire, or the First Order, the Jedi lit the way for the galaxy in a golden age known as the High Republic!

Not everyone who hears the call to adventure wants to answer it....

Jedi Padawan Reath Silas loves adventure—reading about it, that is, not living it. Content to spend hours browsing the Jedi Archives on Coruscant, Reath dreams of being one of the great scholars of the Jedi Order. But Reath's master, the well-respected and virtuous Jora Malli, has other plans: she's taken a post at Starlight Beacon, the Republic's shining new outpost on the edge of known space. As her Padawan, Reath must join her, whether he likes the idea or not. (And he most definitely does not.)

So Reath reluctantly boards the ship that will take him and a few other Jedi to the dedication of Starlight Beacon, where Master Jora waits for him to start their new adventurous life on the frontier. But trouble in hyperspace leaves the ship and other nearby vessels stranded, with only an eerie abandoned space station reachable for shelter. And the secrets hidden there will not only bring Reath to a crossroads but, if left unchecked, could plunge the entire galaxy into darkness....

Interview:

Hey Claudia! First I want to say welcome back to Two Chicks on Books! You haven’t been here in a while and I’m glad you could stop by for a chat! INTO THE DARK sounds AWESOME! I love Star Wars and I can’t wait for everyone to read it!

For the readers: can you tell us a little bit about the INTO THE DARK and the characters?

A young Jedi Padawan, Reath Silas, is traveling to the frontier along with some other Jedi in order to take up a posting at Starlight Beacon. However, on the way, the Great Hyperspace Disaster forces them to take refuge at an isolated, ancient space station. The station seems to be abandoned--but is it? At first it seems that the characters' adventures are very far removed from the dangers readers first encountered in "Light of the Jedi," but some of those dangers are much closer than they know.

What are you working on now?

I can't tell you, I'm afraid! All I can reveal is that it is High Republic related. Soon I should be editing my first original book for adults, THE MURDER OF MR. WICKHAM--no release date yet, but it'll be along at some point in 2022.

I love Star Wars and I know you’re a fan too! How awesome has it been being able to write books from this world?

It's still a little surreal. This is the most incredible sandbox to be asked to play in. I wish I could go back in time and high-five my ten-year-old self. Never would I have believed that I'd get to do this for a living.

Who was your favorite character to write? What about your least favorite?

My favorites to write in ITD were Leox, Geode and Affie--the crew of the ship transporting the Jedi to the frontier. As much as I enjoy writing Jedi, writing about the Force, etc., my heart just got stolen by this ragtag group, probably my favorite "found family" I've ever created. Least favorite? Well, I like all the characters, but it took a while to get Cohmac Vitus' voice right. Probably because he's so careful with his words--I had to be too!

What is your favorite passages/scenes in INTO THE DARK?

My favorite scene/sequence is a rescue that takes place about two-thirds of the way through the book. Because of the Great Disaster, the Republic's resources are spread very thin, and so this group winds up as the only assistance to a very large passenger ships that's been badly damaged and is on fire. It let me write a few action sequences I really enjoyed, plus some humor, too. Humor and action go great together, IMO.

What kind of research did you have to do for the story?

The High Republic is its own thing, so there was less SW canon to draw on than in previous projects I've done--we were all making it up together, as group, partly as we went. Less digging around in reference books or watching movies, more asking each other, "What's Orla's ship called again?" "Where is Jora Malli at this point?" "How long does the Great Disaster last?" That kind of thing. There's a lot to keep straight.

Who is your ultimate book boyfriend/girlfriend?

It's still Peeta Mellark from THE HUNGER GAMES. He's loyal, he's caring, he's strong, he's supportive, and then he brings it all home by being a baker. Total devotion + cupcakes = forever love.

Lightning Round Questions

What are you reading right now? Or what do you have on your TBR that you’re dying to read?

I just finished Hamnet by Maggie O'Farrell, which is AMAZING. Soon I hope to dig in to The Project from Courtney Summers, and I can't wait for the new Leigh Bardugo, of course.

Instagram, Twitter or Facebook?

Instagram, by far.

Favorite Superhero?

Most of my life I would've said Wonder Woman, Professor X, or Captain America, but as of "WandaVision" it's the Scarlet Witch!

Favorite TV show?

Obviously, I'm enjoying "WandaVision" a lot right now. Recently I caught up to the rest of humanity and finally saw "The Queen's Gambit," which was every bit as great as everyone said.

Sweet or Salty?

They're best together! But if I have to pick one, sweet.

Any Phobias?

Nothing interesting, just the usual: heights, spiders.

Song you can’t get enough of right now?

Honestly, I've been taking refuge in classic music during the pandemic: lots of Chet Baker and Oscar Peterson. Their Pandora stations are on heavy rotation.

2021 Movie you’re most looking forward to?

It probably says something about me that I am looking forward to "Nomadland" and "Godzilla vs. Kong" in approximately equal amounts, but I don't know what. And "Dune" looks amazing!
