Can you survive the snotpocalpyse?
Jackson Hart loves picking his nose. But when he finds a tiny warrior in his
booger, everything turns WEIRD and DANGEROUS! Not only does he have a
civilisation of snotlings up his nose . . . one wants revenge.
Mucuszar and his awful germ army have conquered both nostrils and Jackson’s
world is next!
Can Jackson and his friends stop the snotpocalypse? Or will Mucuszar’s deadly
creation destroy the planet?
Interview:
Hey Tarryn!
First I want to say welcome to Two Chicks on Books I’m glad you could stop by
for a chat! SNOTLINGS sounds AWESOME and I can’t wait for everyone to read it!
For the readers: can you tell us a little bit about SNOTLINGS and the characters?
Snotlings is about a boy named Jackson who loves picking his nose … until
he finds tiny creature called a snotling inside his booger. Bad things start to
happen and Jackson teams up with three kids from school – resilient Rosa,
terrified Olivia and the school bully Tane to save their loved ones and their
city from the snotpocalypse!
What are you working on now?
I’m working on book 2 of Snotlings!
Were any of the characters in the
book inspired by people from your real life?
I think there are a lot of
characters that may have characteristics of people I know, but all of my
characters have their own unique quirks.
Who was your favorite character to
write? What about your least favorite?
I really enjoyed writing Lieutenant General. He’s one liners crack me up!
And I can’t think of a least favourite.
What is your favorite passages/scenes
in SNOTLINGS?
A lot of my favourite scenes are spoilers but I love the scene where the
kids have decided to stick together because things are getting a little scary
and they decide to let Jackson’s mum into the room … even though they probably
shouldn’t! It ends up with Jackson’s mum knocking them down the stairs because
she’s trying to pick the kids noses. It makes me laugh because Jackson’s mum
hates things like boogers and farts and she would be horrified if she knew what
she was doing!
What kind of research did you have to
do for the story?
I did so much research! Mostly on the ears nose and throat. I didn’t know
much about this part of the body. When I learnt that the ears and nose were
connected it allowed me to send my two snotlings Crust and Goober to warn
Jackson of the danger he was in. I also had to research what the snotlings and
germs looked like. But I was lucky, my illustrator came up with some awesome
characters!
What inspired you to write middle
grade?
Growing up with my brother inspired me to write middle grade. I was a lot older than him and growing up together was the light of my life.
Primary school aged children are so outgoing, silly, funny and gross! My
brother loved books (much more than me) and the only reason I am an author
today is because of the story Snotlings. This story haunted me to write it and
if I didn’t have my brother picking his nose all the time, I don’t think I
would have come up with the idea.

About Tarryn Mallick:
I became a writer because I had a story to tell. A story
about snot! It may seem strange to write a book about boogers, but growing up,
my little brother tormented me with his snot every… single… day!
I got my degree in Creative and Professional Writing and studied numerous courses and books, applying everything I had learnt to my book. It took me a short six years and now Snotlings is nearly ready to be shared with everyone.
To know that families around the world will squish together in bed and read my story and laugh- as I did with my Mum and brother- brings me so much happiness!
