What are
some of your favorite video games?
Matthew: Now this is
a question I can get behind! I am a firm believer that game design and game
narrative are such a unique and special way of telling a story. I’ve always
loved the 2nd-person storytelling and videogames exist almost exclusively in
that space along with ttrpgs.
Here are some of my favorites:
Grim Fandango — Really beautiful game. So unique. One of the most
interesting, captivating worlds imagined and the writing is topnotch. Love the
character of Manny Calavera, he is so cool. I remember playing that game as a
kid and being so influenced by the idea you can write stories like that. They
don’t have to be anything except what you want them to be, and the freedom to
write something that’s funny and dark and weird and noir and beautiful was
really enlightening.
Disco Elysium — Maybe the best written game of all time? It felt like
reading an excellent novel. Seeing a film that sticks with you for weeks. I
haven’t stopped thinking about Disco Elysium since I beat it and I can’t wait
to go back to it in a couple of years to relive the story.
Elden Ring — Literally can’t stop playing this masterpiece.
Final Fantasy 9 — The best one!
I’m also a big fan of roguelikes, so things like Hades and Binding of
Isaac are great. Since the pandemic I also really got into Magic: The Gathering
and while that isn’t a video game I really do love playing.
Lisa: Ok right now it’s Elden Ring which was a shock even to me as Matthew is a diehard FromSoftware fanboy and has been trying to get me to stick to one of these games for years. But I’ve been sucked in, I can’t help it, it's great even though I never want to ever fight any big bosses ever haha. Fallout 3 is probably my favorite of all-time, I love the aesthetic and world-building and quirky stories of that game, and it was my first foray back into videogames in college. Some others are Final Fantasy 6, Hades, Horizon Zero Dawn, Silent Hill 2, Psychonauts, Bayonetta. I’m kind of all over the place!
