My Favorite Childhood Books
I started reading at the age
of four and by the time I was in first grade I was reading at a fourth-grade
level. I devoured books. I loved the library. Now, looking back I wish that I
had a comprehensive list of all the books that I had read as a child. It would
be fun to see what really shaped my love for reading. I remembered this orange
and white cat from the Richard Scarry’s book The Best First Book Ever. I
adored the Cat Family that took us through their home and named everything
around them. I remember my sister was a huge fan of the little worm named Lowly
with the hat. Now, looking back at it forty years later, the images alone
create a fond moment of nostalgia. I recognize that this happy little book
taught me the foundation of my vocabulary.
The other book that was incredibly
important to me as a child was The Secret Garden. The orphan Mary who
finds herself in the house with a hundred rooms and ends up making two
unexpected friends who help her get into the decaying garden locked behind a
wall. It was such a page turner for me because of the mystery surrounding the
garden. I’m certain that I read it more than once. Now, as an adult and an
author, I love the world that Frances Hodgson Burnett created hidden from view
with its dark secret. I often think about the garden when I water my plants––on
how magical it would be to have as a beautiful place to hide from the world.
Being a voracious reader at a
young age, I will only choose one more book as one of my all-time favorites, The
Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis. I was captivated by the
four siblings adventure from the wardrobe to the frozen world of Narnia. Then add
in the struggle between good and evil with the kids playing a role in rescuing
Narnia, and I was hooked. Looking at this book now, it had all the components
of a story that inspires me including an alternate fantastical world,
interesting characters and so much adventure. All three of these books really
did contribute and influence my love of reading and storytelling.
