Nothing frightens Atticus Everheart more than monsters, thanks to his older brothers, who often threaten to feed him to the beastly creatures.

Fearing that’s what they will do if he doesn’t replace the book he accidentally ruined, he takes a job tutoring a boy in his neighborhood.

Although nervous about the job, Atticus soon discovers there’s a lot more in store for him than teaching. Never in a trillion years would he have imagined he’d be hiding from monsters, working with ghosts, or searching for werewolves and witches. He’s not brave, and he has no plans to change.

Until he’s forced to.

Atticus Everheart, Fifth Grade Tutor and Monster Hunter?

Excerpt #1:

Atticus watched Drago argue with the empty chair. The word batty came to mind again. Atticus squashed the thought. Challenging—isn’t that what the ad had said? Atticus would use the word challenging to describe Drago. Although, if Drago couldn’t spell ‘home’ he wouldn’t be able to spell ‘challenging’, which was probably a blessing in disguise. If Atticus kept asking Drago to spell words he could use to describe his student, Drago would catch on, and Atticus doubted Drago would cooperate if he knew Atticus gave him unflattering nicknames.

“Come on, one terrifying scream.” Drago pleaded with the rocking chair.

The chair swayed and the floorboards creaked. Drago must have bumped it. Empty rocking chairs didn’t rock back and forth on their own. But to be sure, Atticus flipped down the blue monocle. The rocking chair was empty. Of course, it is. He switched from blue to crimson. No monsters either. He raised the lens.

Drago had moved in front of the window.

“Then fly through him.” He threw his hands in the air. “Well, at least show yourself.” Drago really thought his grandmother sat in the chair. Poor kid. Atticus knew what it felt like to miss a grandparent. He closed his mouth, walked up to the rocking chair, and said, “It’s very nice to meet you, Ms. Mina.”

Drago pinned the air between him and Atticus with a narrow-eyed stare. “If you’d show yourself, he’d know he was talking to an empty chair.”

“Oh, I’m sorry,” said Atticus, playing along. “Is she standing now?”

“This is hopeless.” Drago faced Atticus. “Fine, I’ll take your pretest. Happy?”

”Yes!” Now they were getting somewhere. He glanced down at the list he’d brought and decided to try a more advanced word. “Can you spell poison?”

“There’s an idea.” Only, instead of spelling the word, Drago squawked, “What?” Then he pivoted on his heels until he faced the opposite way and sprinted toward the stairs.

“Not again,” moaned Atticus. He hiked his backpack higher up on his back and hurried after his student.

About C.L. Colyer:

C.L. Colyer found her love for writing in first grade when her class was sent to the library and asked to find a book for their first book report. While she doesn’t still have this book report, she’s very proud to say she got an A on it. Her favorite thing about the book was that it had no words. That’s right, not one! That gave her the freedom to interpret the pictures in any way she wanted and write her own story.

This sparked her love for writing essays. It wasn’t until she was an adult that she sat down and penned her first novel. This story has a special place in her heart because it’s the story that helped her discover her passion for writing. She has since written several books, many of which may never see the light of day, but all of which helped her learn to combine her passion for writing with her fascination with all things mythical. You’ll find examples of this in her novels.

Her alter ego writes stories for teens and adults under Cherie Colyer.
