WINTER is the second scariest time of year. And it’s not just because of the terror of last-minute gift buying, frightening crowds, and haunting memories of holiday gatherings past. Specters cast dark shadows in snow, frost covers every inch of your sanctuary, and a variety of monsters from world legend and lore stalk your dreams from the child-eating Icelandic Yule Cat, to Northern Europe’s icy wielder of justice Frau Hölle and her Wild Hunt, to Germany’s devilish anti-Santa, Krampus, the Kallikantzaros evil goblins from Greece, and the Alpine witch Frau Perchta and her Kraumpus-like minions, the Perchten.
VAULT Comics knows this terror, feels your pain, and wants to share the horror…
Enter VAULT’s bone-chilling list of most popular horror, fantasy, and science fiction titles, with the best talent in SFFH comics with a CHILLING HOLIDAY, Holiday Special! This Winter, slay/sleigh those demons of indecision with the best in creator-owned Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror!

Post from Tim Daniel:
TIM
DANIEL- THE PLOT – writer, END AFTER END – writer, NIGHTFALL: Double Feature –
writer (+ he’s an amazing designer and artist!)
1.
What Winter holidays do you celebrate in December
and January … and how do you celebrate them?
Christmas! We have two daughters and we’ve always wanted this to be a
special time for them, so we start on Thanksgiving weekend by putting up the
lights and preparing to turn that last calendar page as the leftovers dwindle.
2.
What traditions are old family traditions?
We’ve reinvented our holidays in search of our own joy and establishing
new traditions. We do have decorations that go back two generations that we put
upevery year and recipes for the cakes and Italian pizzelle cookies my
grandmother used to make. We try to bring our extended family into the holidays
in that way—throughout the house and at the table when we gather for dinners.
3.
What traditions are ones that YOU’VE started?
It’ not one thing. It’s comprehensive and all-encompassing in our
household. It starts with the decorations, the tree (every year we add new
ornaments picked by each member of the family) and extends to my wife’s
homemade hot cocoa (like
sweet molten lava with fresh whipped cream) and homemade cookies. Top
that off with our annual night sledding, snowman building, and walking around
the surrounding neighborhood to see all the houses lit up brightly. It’s less a
series of traditions and more the creation of a feeling. It’s a pursuit of the
mythic Rockwellian Christmas.
4.
What sort of activities during the holidays are your
favorites?
Baking and decorating cookies with my wife and daughters is always a
perfect summation of the season. A collision of joy and calamity. The burned
batch, the spilled confection sugar…and yet, knowing it won’t all go according
to plan, we go allin on sugar cookies, butter cookies, M&Ms, and chocolate
chips. You name it, we back it. This year we’re hoping to add-in my
grandmother’s Pizzelles.
5.
What activities do you like the least?
I don’t know about you, but at some point, in every season, there’s that
give-up moment where you just have to let it all go and know you did the best
you could to get everything done--every gift wrapped, every package sent, every
card mailed. There’s no one thing not to like, there’s a confluence of demands
on your time and energy that can exhaust you, so by the time Santa has come and
gone there’s nothing left but to enjoy the look on my daughters’ faces on
Christmas morning.
6.
What are your favorite holiday memories from
childhood?
My grandparents’ house in Philadelphia, PA. Oh, the smells of my Nan’s
baking and the big family dinner table loaded with it all! Bowls and baskets of
food. Plates of cookies and cakes, and those godawful rumballs…which the six-
year-old me was incredibly unprepared for. I can still feel the warmth and love
of that house. The mingled aromas of all that food and the decorations, some of
which are displayed in our house every year. And my grandfather had a trainset
that he assembled every Christmas and to me it was spellbinding.
7.
What are your favorite holiday memories from
adulthood?
It’s the same every year--once Santa is done. I sit with my wife on the
couch in front of the tree with all its lights, years of ornaments we’ve
accumulated, and all the wrapped presents and we give thanks for our good
fortune and each other.
The very thought of it chokes me up.
The most memorable and emotional will likely always be witnessing my
daughter perform her solo during a run in the local theater’s Christmas Carol.
Her tiny voice filling this 300+ seat auditorium…so pure and fragile, yet so
strong and brave. I was on the tech crew for those shows and every single night
I stood behind the flyout, and she brought me to tears with “A Place Called
Home.” And here I am again, welling up…I still listen to the recording of the
show
8.
What are your favorite holiday foods?
We do Thanksgiving three times! Twice on Thanksgiving, with two smaller
birds which means roughly 4 days of turkey. One year we decided that we love it
so much, why not do it for Christmas Eve dinner. Combine that with my
grandmother’s cream sherry cake for dessert and it’s my favorite dinner of the
year. And the cookies, did I mention those? No, you ate them all...
9.
What makes these Winter holidays so special for you?
My family. My wife and daughters. The time we get to spend
together--schedule free, worry free, and feeling the anticipation building
towards the day and being very grateful to have the time off afterwards to
really savor it. There is simply nothing more rewarding than making a fire and
getting down on the living room floor to play and share in the experience with
them.
10. Anything
else you’d like to talk about that is holiday-related?
I really hope that everyone has an opportunity to create some time and
space to enjoy something special for themselves and their loved ones this
holiday season. I am very grateful for this career and for this company, Vault
Comics, and in this moment, I’d like to share that gratitude with all of you.
The
Winter Holidays and … your characters in THE PLOT!
1. How do your book’s characters celebrate the holidays?
The Blaine family certainly celebrates the holidays. Given the trauma
they experienced depicted in THE PLOT I would think they’re very grateful to
have survived and thus they savor these very special times of the year. They
deeply appreciate one another, and their shared experience has forged a
profound bond amongst Chase, Reese, Mackenzie and Zach. Even Tage the German
Sheppard is there, though moving a little slower now and barking at malevolent
looking shadows far less these days
a. Do they celebrate with family & friends?
Yes, everyone is welcome, and I’d like to think that means the family has
grown as time has passed. Mackenzie was pregnant as the book ended and Zach had
just embarked for college. The Blaine’s are finally free of their terrible and
terrifying family legacy as much as they’ll ever be and they’re thriving.
b. What do they eat?
A big ‘ol traditional feast, but they are a mixed-race family, with
Mackenzie and Zach being Chinese-American (did you catch that in the book?) and
they have certainly explored what that means for them. I’d imagine the table is
filled with Chinese dishes that their mother Wendy might have introduced them
both to in childhood.
c. What do you think they’d like to do?
Anything and everything that does not entail being pursued by a bog
monster…which is the most relaxing and indulgent of holiday activities--eat, go
to the movies, play games, build fires, read a good book and sleep.
2. If your book’s characters visited during the holidays, how would you
celebrate with them?
Maybe the best thing our family could do is show them warmth. Make them
feel at home and welcome. Give them a sense of stability and normalcy. Be open
and relatable to each one of them and never dig into the subject of their
horrific experience in Cape Augusta unless they broached the topic.
The
Winter Holidays and … your characters in your upcoming Vault releases: END
AFTER END and NIGHTFALL Double Feature!
1. How do your book’s characters celebrate the holidays?
There are no holidays in END AFTER END, at least not this version, but
there may well be other versions of the END where others get to experience
nothing but an eternity of holidays! The END is infinite.
NIGHTFALL: DOUBLE FEATURE is a whole other story. The family of DENIZEN
is about to merge itself together via the marriage of Helene & Richard and are
in fact on their way to grandmother’s house in California to celebrate
Christmas with a wedding ceremony when theyget waylaid in the Arizona desert…so
Denizen is horror’s equivalent to DIE HARD. Action movie or Christmas movie?
Horror comic or Christmas comic? Let the debate begin.
