“Wear your heart on your
sleeve.” That’s the saying. But in BONDING,
people wear their anxiety on their chests – in the form of a parasite
that shows everyone just what you’re feeling on the inside …
WEAR YOUR LOVE ON YOUR CHEST
A man, a woman—and their parasites. Marcus has been alone since the loss of
his closest friend and has just recently entered into the dating scene, while
Laura has drifted in and out of relationships since high school. They meet,
they have a great first date, and Marcus almost dies—because the slug-like
parasite that everybody carries in this world nearly rejects him, its
host. BONDING is a funny, quirky, and honest look at love, in
a world where everyone wears their anxiety, not on their sleeves, but on their
chest like big ol' leeches.
Fans of Matthew Erman's work on Vault Comics' WITCHBLOOD and
Archaia's JIM HENSON'S THE DARK CRYSTAL: AGE OF RESISTANCE will
find lots to love in BONDING. Fans of Image Comics' ICE
CREAM MAN VOL. 1, DC Comics' COLLAPSER and even books
like THE HOST by Stephenie Meyer and THE PARASITOLOGY
TRILOGY by Mira Grant will enjoy this foray into all the stressors of
dating...where a parasite is the least of your worries (unless it kills you,
that is.)
Review:
“Erman and Pearson skewer genre norms
in this sweet and casually unsettling comics romance-dramedy…”- Publishers Weekly
Interview With Matthew:
BONDING: A Love Story About People
and Their Parasites QUESTIONS
Why do you think BONDING is so
important and relevant to the times in which we live?
MATTHEW: Important is a big word, and I don’t
know if I’m going to use it to describe my own book but sure, if you say so,
haha.
If I’m being
honest, it’s relevance to the times was entirely accidental — I wrote a story
that happened to deal with a parasitic invasion that requires people to wear a
thing for the rest of their lives, lest they die and then we had COVID happen
and all that was reality.
List your favorite graphic novels or
comics from when you were a child and talk about how you see them as an adult.
MATTHEW: I wasn’t a big reader when I was a
kid, you know — growing up lower middle-class meant that my time and my hobbies
weren’t necessarily mine to dictate but more up to what my parents had the
ability to give me, so I spent 95% of my time playing video games in my room
and playing video games with friends down the block.
List your favorite graphic novels
from last year and why you like them.
MATTHEW: It Took Look by Mark Bouchard and
Bayleigh Underwood, TRVE KVLT by Liana Kangas and Scott Brian Wilson, It’s
Lonely at the Center of the Earth by Zoe Thorogood, SQUIRE by Nadia Shammas and
Sara Alfaghee, there was a ton of great books in 2022.
List the graphic novels and/or prose
books that you’re looking forward to this year.
MATTHEW: Sounding a bit self-centered but I have a great many things coming out this year that are mostly all unannounced right now and I’m just so excited for people to get to look at them, and read them this year. So, all my upcoming things that no one knows about, haha.
