The Last Teetan

The people of the Citadel slowly opened their doors, and some strolled along while headed toward their businesses. Kaven ignored the commotion and kept walking until he reached the market district. Then, a shop caught his attention. They left the door open. At least someone is fond of working hard he thought to himself before he entered.

"Hello there," he said as the smell of rust came rushing to him. He covered his nose.

"Apologies, lad, the iron rusts when it is abandoned," said a young man that came to greet him.

"Are you not a blacksmith?" Kaven asked. As a gust of wind unraveled his cloak briefly, Kaven quickly covered himself. "Then why leave them unattended? It hasn't even rained in the Citadel for very long."

"It's not the rain that rusts our iron," the man locked his gaze with Kaven for a moment and took a deep breath.

"Then what does?"

The man sighed. "Would you like to drink something?"

Kaven shook his head. "I wouldn't want to intrude."

"I'm sorry, it's my brother's shop. I came from Wynne when I heard what happened to him."

"From Wynne?" Kaven raised a brow.

The man smiled and extended a hand. "I made it just in time; the name is Robert."

"K... Miles," Kaven said as he shook his hand.

"There are far more terrible things than rain in this world, Miles," Robert sighed. "Have you ever been to Wynne?"

"Can't say I have," Kaven replied. "Anything interesting there?"

"Ah," Robert took a deep breath. "I was quite up the chain back then. I've since turned my life around, though I've seen enough adventures for a lifetime."

"What happened?"

"When I heard what happened to my brother, it was almost too important to be a coincidence. I just felt a connection. I was head of a... certain temple in Wynne."

Kaven squinted his eyes. He tried to make his face but couldn't. "Whatever happened there was connected to your brother's state?"

"I saw Veda. Or rather, he talked through a girl no older than sixteen," Robert said as his brows widened. "What I saw was not a savior. And that is why they shunned me. My people," he added before he broke his gaze and lowered his head. "I was ashamed."

"A Teetan? You're a damn Teetan?" Kaven snapped.

"Not anymore," Robert shook his head. "There is an old prophecy, dated thousands of years ago - about a wandering knight in the lands of Dragonhead."

Kaven laughed. "You said you're not a Teetan, yet you still believe in fantasy tales?"

"Have you not seen what is happening? The Titanlord is walking amongst us, yet you still choose to ridicule us. But tell me, do you know anyone who can read the ancient tongue better?"

"What does the ancient prophecy, by the wandering knight in Dragonhead say?"

"The royal records mention a great war right before the first Magmar became king, the shattering of Myrn, and an ancient curse that befell the Titans thousands of years ago."

"An ancient curse?"

"Yes!" Robert nodded his head. "The royal archives are filled with stories about Titans turning when bearing more than they can handle. However, I believe there is more truth to this, hiding in the depths of Dragonhead."

Kaven felt his heartbeat in his throat. His pulse rose, but he calmed himself down. "Let's see, Magmars became kings, but Myrn did not shatter. So, mankind will not end?"

Robert shook his head again. "You still refuse to believe. Myrn did shatter! The Magmars changed the name of the Old Capital to Myrn when the original one split into three islands," he said as he straightened three fingers. "Hollow Land and the Twin Islands were once joined together," he said, lowering two fingers.

"Robert... you must not speak of this to anyone. If you want your Teetan curse to end, I suggest you forget this happened. Tend to your brother, who appears to have been a good man."

"Would you like to see him?" Robert asked.

"What good would that bring?"

"Come," Robert waved Kaven in, pushing the curtains to reveal a bed. Then, on it, laid a man so thin that his bones pressed at his skin. His mouth was wide open, and his veins shone on his body.

"What the hell happened to him?"

"The Titanlord happened, Miles," Robert said, they say he is evil, but when last he was here, he transcended both gods and titans. He spoke words to my brother, and he has never risen. They call it a compulsion. It didn't start this way, but right around the time when an army of Dwellers attacked the Citadel, I received a letter from my brother saying that he parted with our family heritage."

Kaven's brows narrowed again.

"He would rather die than give the sword that our ancestors used in the times of Robrin the Red."

"You complicate matters."

Robert cocked his hand into his pocket and took out a scroll. "Here, read it yourself."

Kaven sighed and took the scroll from his hand, and read it.

Dearest brother,

You are the only family I possess in this world. I must inform you that I have passed down our heritage and pride, the shining sword, to a little girl. I do not know what possessed me to agree, but I cannot live with myself.

There is darkness in me, brother, I feel it eating away at my soul, and I know not what to do. We haven't seen eye to eye, you and I, but I heard that your company might know a thing or two about such curses.

Aid me, brother... for I am not long for this world.

Kaven twisted the paper. "Why are you telling me this?"

Robert sighed yet again. "I want you to know just who it is you serve."

A chill ran down Kaven's spine. "Who are you? Really?"

"When the wind blew away your cloak for a moment, I saw the same sword another carried. One who served the Red Hand. It is no secret that you lot are what makes the Titanlord's army. I had imagined you or someone would come to save your captain soon enough."

"All this to educate me on history? Or had you hoped I would shove my sword in my commander instead?"

Robert grabbed Kaven's shoulder. "You must know who you serve! The signs never lie! This, I swear to you. If the rumors are true and the Titanlord uses two Titan Powers, he will turn. That is fact. That is the Taint!"

"The Taint?"

"The same curse that turned the zealots into Dwellers in the first era. The Titanlord will be lord of nothing but demons soon enough... That is how the Dweller Lord came to be."

A commotion.

"What's going on?"

"The Hanging has begun..."

About M.G.:

M.G. Darwish is an award winning author who writes dark, twisted and action-packed fiction. He tries his best not to base his characters on anyone he knows in real life to avoid that extra weird conversation about how they were brutalized and killed in the book. Oh and he's terrified of a penguin uprising more than ghosts and demons.
