REINCEPTION WILL CHANGE YOUR MIND...whether you want it or not

A hundred years in the future, ReInception is used to modify the brain and eliminate unwanted behaviors--everything from overeating to the worst criminal impulses. Unmodified 20-year-old Leandrea Justus feels ordinary compared to her perfect friends who like living in a ReInception world.

Not everyone is in favor of modification--some remain quiet, while others are outwardly insubordinate. After a protest turns violent, a rogue member of the serving class known as The Prole saves Leandrea and exposes a new reality to her: The true purpose of ReInception may be far more nefarious than advertised. Now, her free will may be her greatest asset. But Leandrea's discoveries about ReInception are putting her life at stake. Can she save society or will the secrets she uncovers start a Civil War?

ReInception is a fiction-debut, the first in a new, action-filled sci-fi trilogy with surprising twists, and a story that may be closer to reality than we think.

Reviews:

"A richly detailed world full of thought-provoking tech. Straus's imagination and deft storytelling shine in this impressive debut!"--Jason M. Hough, New York Times Bestselling author of "The Darwin Elevator."

★★★★★
Literary Titan Gold Award
ReInception is an excellent science fiction novel with a focus on genetic engineering. The adventure readers go on as they follow the characters in the battle for humanity's free will is engaging and thrilling. With the moral question of what is right or wrong and what is the benefit for society as a whole at the forefront of this novel, it will be hard to put down once you start.

"This is a remarkable book. Brilliant, gripping, endlessly creative."--Amazon Best-Selling Author of City Dark, Roger Canaff

Excerpt

“Fly home, canary.”

“Leandrea stepped back. She knew this derogatory term for the Upper caste, but she'd never been called one to her face.

             “Beg ya?”

He glared at her, his face all bones and angles.

“Y’aren't welcome here,” he growled, his voice low and rumbling with anger.

She flicked her eyes toward his left breast, ‘Ward 17,362 Bedford.’ Wards were raised by the state. Had he been abandoned? Orphaned? Maybe his parents were in the grid. Whatever the case, Wards were one step away from Crims.

Her heartbeat sped up, and she fought to steady her voice. “I didn't ask your opinion.” Her comm tapped her wrist, a voice whispering in her ear: Heart rate elevated.

“Up there,” he pointed toward the skies, “I've to be polite. I've to do what you birds say. But down here is my domain. Go play in your own cage.”

She sucked in a breath. How dare he speak to her like that? But he was more than a little right. She’d come here to meet Prole, to understand them, but she had no right to assume she’d be welcomed with open arms. She needed him to know she was different.

“I don't believe in the castes.”

The Ward pushed air out of his nose, making a disgusted sound. “Only thing worse than a canary is a self-righteous one.”

“The Keep placed three tall glasses filled with pinkish liquid in front of her.

“Leave 'er,” he warned the Ward.

“I've every right,” the Ward snapped.

“Just leave 'er. She scanty clady.”

The Ward made a strange, huffing sound, looking her up and down. “Ney let mite size trick. She scanty nicht. She fierce. Pro a Pro she fierce.”

      “Yell fierce clady no clam.”

She didn’t know exactly what they were saying, but she didn't need to be fluent in Patois to get the gist.

“I harvest their food that I'm not allowed to eat.” The Ward said, switching back to common speech, which Leandrea presumed was so he could be sure she understood. “I massage their backs that I don't want to touch so they can feel good, and then I have to fix their earth-shattering tech problems, like when their vid screen goes glitchy.” He turned and glared at her. “I clam all day night. I ney clam nicht here.”

About Sarena Straus:

I write novels for the curious and adventurous, for people who are intrigued by a “what happens if,” scenario, and who like to explore the outcomes. My characters are ordinary people who find out that they are capable of extraordinary things and discover that one person can truly make a difference.

After receiving a BA in art history and political science from Barnard, I graduated from Fordham University School of Law. I then worked for five years at the Bronx District Attorney’s Office (BXDA), where I prosecuted sex crimes and child abuse cases. After leaving BXDA, I published a true-crime memoir, Bronx DA: True Stories from the Sex Crimes and Domestic Violence unit (Barricade, 2006). In 2010, my book sold as a TV Pilot to CBS/Paramount.

I’ve gone on to publish numerous legal articles and works of poetry, and I was an editor for a legal magazine. For a few years, I was also a talking head, commenting on current criminal cases in the media on tv and radio.

Today, I live in the Hudson Valley, NY with my husband, our two children (also budding writers), two naughty Labrador retriever ladies, and two barn cat boys. I’m now working on sequels to my debut novel ReInception and will keep you posted about them on my site.

When not writing or lawyering, I love to scuba dive, take photographs, and travel off the beaten path. I’ll swap diving or courtroom stories with you all day long or happily talk to you about books–writing them or reading them!
