The Goddess of Death, the Grimm Brothers, and the Devil collide in a thrilling new paranormal fantasy series.
Primrose Titan is the Goddess of
Death, an ancient deity who reaps the souls of the dead and rules the
Underworld. All life ends with death, and in death, there is no happiness.
Primrose knows this better than anyone, and her heavy responsibility has
twisted her reality, purging her of all feelings for humans-or so she believes.
When the Demon King Lucifer escapes
his prison in Hell and threatens chaos on the human world, Primrose must hunt
him down. The High Court, a council of deities, is skeptical Primrose can
handle Lucifer on her own and appoints the handsome yet icy Atlas Grimm, one of
the fabled Grimm Brothers, to assist her. Strange, dark magic and supernatural
creatures sent from the Devil himself stand in their way, along with political
enemies acquired over the millennia.

Dark Magic,
the first book of The Chronicles of the Underworld, features Primrose Titan,
the Goddess of Death. When the Devil escapes his prison in Hell, Primrose must
team up with one of the fabled Grimm Brothers to hunt Lucifer down and prevent
his murderous rampage. The deleted scene below is a flashback to one of
Primrose’s first memories of her brother, Benjamin, the God of Life.
PLUCKED
FROM THE DARKNESS a second time, my surroundings shaped to reveal a second
memory. I sat beside Ben on the cool stone floor, overlooking a grand lake
from the height of a cliff's ledge. The moon's light reflected across the still
water and brought to life the woods surrounding the lake. Tall trees touched
the dark blue sky, and the little stars glimmered like dots of fire. A brief
breeze brought the scent of honey-sweet pine to my nose. The water's breath was
cool though the warmth from within our bodies was comfortable and kind. The
cliff's jagged stones were strong and firm, artistically lingering over the
lake. Crickets sang their symphonies, and the hum of sleeping creatures echoed
into a triumphant accompaniment to the night's orchestra.
Ben's watchful gaze never
left me. He read the movements of my eyes, the slight tilt of my head, and the
regularity of my breath to understand my reaction to the fullest. "How do
you like the world, sister?"
I inhaled the clean
evening air and held it in my chest to relish its fresh feeling. "It's
beautiful, Ben." I met his warm brown eyes. "I don't think I can ever
repay you for giving me this life. For gifting me this land and giving me eyes
to see it."
He smiled, pleased with my
reaction, and leaned closer to me as if to tell a secret. "You never need
to thank nor repay me. You are the greatest gift any fool like me could ask
for. I forged you from my own blood and the dirt of this earth. When I created
you, I gave you my heart and soul. You mean everything to me, Primrose."
I leaned my head on his
shoulder. "And you to me."
We were bonded by more
than blood. Our hearts were one, and my soul was crafted by his hands. He was
the God of Life. I was his sister. The tie between us was made of an
unbreakable thread. He brought me into existence twenty years ago, and I was
new. I didn't know life, beauty, the earth, or time. Benjamin led me to every corner
of the world to show me its magnificence, and this was the last place he wanted
to take me. He called this place home. A little distance behind us was a palace
he said was to be lived in.
My brother taught me what
plants and animals were good to eat and how to hunt them. He taught me how to
count time and rest part of the day in a self-induced coma called sleep so that
I may be strong. Through his blessing, he placed the elements of the earth at
my command and gave me the power of what he called healing. Ben promised to
teach me to use it if the time ever came to need it. I trusted him with my
entire being. Everything I knew, I knew because of him.
Ben gestured toward the
world about us. "I would give you anything you desire, Rosy. Anything.
Name it, and it is yours."
I shook my head in awe.
"There is nothing more you can give me. I have the world in the palm of my
hand; you've shown it to me and given it as a gift. I have the freedom to walk,
talk, feel as a living being would. You've given me strength, magic, and
knowledge beyond what I imagined. And I have you. What more could I ask?"
As the words left my mouth, I sensed the slight wrongness in them. I meant them
before I'd spoken them, but after I'd thought about what I said, the words fell
flat.
Ben noticed this as well
and nodded. "Yet... there is something you would want."
I remained silent, unsure
of what to say. What a foolish and selfish creature I would be to demand
anything more from my brother, the God who made me flesh. To ask for more would
make me a creature of greed, undeserving of the gifts I had been blessed with.
Shame ate at the back of my neck.
My brother, however, had a
heart of gold and wanted to know what I desired. "What is it you want,
Rosy? Don't be afraid to ask."
My tongue was dry, even
with his reassurance. To ask what I wanted to ask was wrong in many ways. But a
primal need within me drove my insensitivity, and nothing could stop my next
words from leaving my lips. "I want others, brother. Others like you and
me. Living beings that I can speak to and spend time with."
Benjamin's eyes darkened
at my request, and I knew I breached a forbidden topic. My brother's emotions
hid themselves from me. "Am I not enough for you?"
"Never think
that." I touched his arm, alarmed by his terribly wrong deduction.
"You are everything and more."
"Yet you need
others."
"Need them, I do
not." I shook my head. "I have all that I need right here, right now.
I just wish..." I looked out to the beautiful forest, and a sigh left my
chest, "I wish there were others like me. Sometimes I'm afraid of what
will happen when you're not here. If you ever leave. I can't imagine
being"—I shivered—"alone."
Ben's hard expression
faded into gentle compassion. "I understand. I used to be alone, and that
life is not one I would wish upon anyone." He paused to consider my
request. "If it is others you desire, then others will be made to quiet
your fears, but they will not be of my blood. Only you are my sister, and only
you are given the gift of my heart."
He got to his feet and helped me up. "But remember one thing, Rosy. You needn’t be afraid. You will never be alone. You’ll always have me."
