An often engaging tale of kinship and finding safe harbor. - Kirkus Reviews

Author Kristy McGinnis has crafted a beautifully told story that really focuses deeply on the central characters and the choices they've made in their lives that may or may not define their future. - Readers Favorite

An empowering, contemporary, literary dive into the pool of maternal messiness from the author of Ellipsis. Perfect for fans of Jodi Picoult and Taylor Jenkins Reid.

Kenna has been living under the shadow of her mother, America’s favorite celebrity, Tessa Shepherd. America doesn't know what the woman is really like though. Now, the twenty-year-old student finds herself immersed in scandal and facing her mother's wrath. Out of options, she turns to the surrogate who hasn't been in her life since birth.

Still grieving the death of her wife, Rachel's been going through the empty motions of life. She hasn't seen the child she handed over at birth since that day some twenty years before but when she learns of Kenna's plight she finds herself reaching out despite the contract she signed those many years ago.

Desperate to escape Tessa's wrath and to find purpose again, the women embark on a life-changing road trip that takes them down the eastern seaboard to the ultimate destination of Key West, Florida. Along the way they confront old ghosts, find inspiration in the most unlikely of faces, and redefine what family really means. Part escape, part adventure, the women uncover secret stories from each other's lives and realize they are more alike than they initially understood.

The reader is the third person along the journey, privy to Kenna and Rachel’s secrets and to their transformation in this vivid, beautifully crafted tale of how two near-strangers can save each other.

Top 5 favorite scenes and why.

  1. Kenna and Rachel visit the Coast Guard station in Little Creek. Rachel, who is usually firmly in charge is in the more emotionally charged position here. She’s confronting these ghosts from her past and contemplating how she ever got from this place to her quiet life in Pennsylvania. Then she walks into the Day Room and *gasp*, a picture of Delta and her crewmates hangs on a wall. As the young seaman giving the tour relates the story behind this picture, a rescue of a bunch of college kids, Kenna is zeroing in on Delta’s form. A small, cocky girl with curls escaping her tight military bun, she exudes strength and bravado. Kenna’s forced to compare her own trajectory with the girl’s and she finds it wanting. Rachel, on the other hand, finds some peace as she says good-bye to the image of her now deceased beloved wife.
  2. Rachel confronts her father in his workshop, in Charleston. There have been so many things unsaid between them in the 20+ years since he rejected her relationship with Delta. Rachel finally has her say, and has Delta’s say as well. The touching moment here is when the normally stoic old man breaks down and admits his regret. This is a turning point for Rachel, she’s able to let go of some of her anger.
  3. Every scene that’s set in Tessa’s POV. Okay that’s cheating, there are four of these chapters, they each short and not-so-sweet, but Tessa is such a delicious villain to dig into. Of all her chapters, I guess my favorite is when she’s reading her attorney, Phillip, the riot act over Kenna’s rebellion. She has the audacity to regret not having forced her own daughter to sign a non-disclosure agreement. It’s just so textbook Tessa.
  4. Kenna and Rachel meeting Kenny in Cocoa, FL. He’s got such a sad but inspirational story as he explains why he’s literally walking a pilgrimage down the Florida coast. As someone who’s walked the Camino de Santiago, I’m actually a big proponent of doing what Kenny’s doing here.
  5. That final scene between Kenna and Tessa. I don’t want to give any major spoilers here, but when Kenna hears that voice in her ear. Goosebumps!!
