Sorcerer Christaan De Rein's return to Liverpool does not go well, starting with the fact that his trusted apprentice, Higgins, dies on the way. Then again, Higgins dies a lot. Of course, Rein doesn't expect to be welcomed with open arms after being banished for nine years, but a cryptic summons from The Musician herself cannot go unanswered.

But when Rein arrives all is in chaos. People with fairy blood are turning up dead. The Forum Magicae is undone and the Curators sieged.

And in another world altogether, where Earth is just a legend, a girl named Niena and a cursed lyre hold the key to saving both realms. Or destroying them.

Reviews:

★★★★ "Reeves writes with both the mechanical acuity of Shakespeare and the warm, wry wit of Terry Pratchett...This is an exquisitely written start to a new fantasy series that demonstrates the dangers of an irresistible distraction."- Red City Review

★★★★"A cleverly plotted fantasy adventure, thoughtfully written.' The Wishing Shelf Book Awards"- The Wishing Shelf

★★★ 1/2"...vivid and immersive, directly drawing the reader into the world and lettingus feel the danger of a ship in stormy waters or the difficulty offinding a path through the chaos of a London crowd.”- IndieReader

Top 5 favorite scenes and why.

When I look back, finding a scene that I enjoyed isn’t that difficult. Narrowing it down to five however, well that is where it gets a bit trickier. Is the scene a spoiler? Does it make sense out of context? Does it involve pigeons? There is a lot to consider. I believe I have done it though, and of the three current books in the series, here are the five scenes I enjoyed writing the most.

Curses of Scale, Bluecoat Guard Tower Scene – In the first prequel we are introduced to Niena’s grandfather Marny, and this is the scene that really sets his personality. Gruff, grizzled, and grimy after a day in the rain. The mood is dreary, and the setting atmospheric. Then there is this line:

“I’ve been stuck up in this mud hole for a week shitting in my helmet,” the old man answers, head cocked. “You can bugger off.”

The Melody of Three, First Chapter

Openings hard to nail, and obviously this is where you can lose a reader right off the bat. I love all my work, but here I really enjoyed writing the introduction of the eccentric Chistaan De Rein. It took a lot of research, studying old maps and reading through archives to bring back Liverpool from the early 1800’s, but I feel it was worth it. Plus, this little bit is very evocative with flashes of humour and tension, all while setting the stakes.

The Melody of Three, Riddles

Sethlan is old. Ancient. And the way he thinks, as an elf, is alien. Nothing highlights this more than the riddle-based spell combat (say that five times fast) against Niena. I also love retelling ancient old poems and riddles – call outs to obscure texts and sagas can be found all over - and one of those used here is among the most niche and ancient.

A Song in the Dark, On the Run

I like writing creepy scenes. Though, when I do I end up jumping at shadows in the middle of the night. I am a scaredy cat, don’t ever watch a horror movie with me. Anyways this scene has tons of creepiness, action, and just the right amount of humour. It also displays some of Christaan and Higgin’s skill in spell fighting.

A Song in the Dark, Banter

This scene:

>>

“Stop it,” Higgins growls. “I’m coming, I’m coming.”

“I’d bloody rather become geography.”

There is a low rumble from the horizon. Higgins squints, catching a crash of lighting in a line of clouds hiding around the peaks. To his left, he can see the elf stopping while Rein dangles below.

“I will surmount this craig my bloody self,” his master says.

The apprentice turns back. “Pride goeth before a fall.”

Abi in malam crucem!”

Higgins rubs the bridge of his nose. Go to the cross. He’s telling me to hang myself. Right, then. “I stand by my statement, sir. Any breakfast without eggs is neither a break, nor a fast. It is an abomination, sir.”

“Abomination?” Rein yells. “Abomination!” He froths. “I’ve eaten the same thing every morning since I was a boy in Holland.”

“Well, there’s the first problem, you Dutch—”

Lightning crashes in the background of their conversation, distracting Higgins as the elf climbs down.

“Enough,” Sethlan says. “Take my hand.”

Thunder rocks. Finally, a twitch of Rein’s moustache signals surrender. And as the elf extends his hand towards the Inspector, the first droplets of the oncoming storm arrive.

“We must keep moving.” Sethlan blinks as sleet hits his cheek. “Regna.”

Why? I don’t actually know, maybe just because it is silly. Sometimes, that is all that is needed.
