6 Influential Books—Jonathan DeCoteau, author of the War of the Animals Series
In
my War of the Animals (Book 1): The Shut Face of Thunder, I sought to
pay homage to the inspirational “animal” books that inspired me as a reader and
writer, specifically, these six titles. They
each brought out my inner child! All

1. Watership Down by Richard Adams
Both
the book and the 1978 movie had a tremendous impact on me, making me want to
write my own animal adventure story one day.
Azaz The Grizzly Bear King is meant to pay homage to General Woundwort,
especially in Azaz’s climatic fight near the end of The Shut Face of Thunder.
2. Jonathan Livingston Seagull by Richard Bach
Snow
Prophet circling the skies for the first time, realizing he has far more on his
mind than seizing his next prey was meant to pay homage to Jonathan Livingston
Seagull and his quest for meaning.
3. Animal Farm by George Orwell
At
their first meeting in The Shut Face of Thunder, the animals form rules
that later come back to haunt them when Azaz breaks their rules with reckless
abandon. This was meant to be a nod to
laws the animals devise in George Orwell’s famous work.
4. Planet of the Apes by Pierre Boulle
Yorba The Ape King, one of the original animal lords vying for control, was meant to pay homage to the most famous novel ever to bear the premise of animals taking over.
5. Zoo by James Patterson and Michael Ledwidge
The
March of the Pets scene in The Shut Face Of Thunder was meant to pay
homage to Zoo, in this case by approaching the topic differently. One chapter from Zoo—Chapter 55, I
believe—captures the aggression forming between a dog and his owner so
wonderfully I chose to go in an opposite direction in my work out of respect to
the most famous contemporary take on “Nature gone wild” books.
6. Dune by Frank Herbert
I originally read Dune (and viewed the 1984 movie) as an environmental work. Any outrage the animals have at how humans have treated their planet in The Shut Face of Thunder owes something to this masterpiece and its sprawling vision of the future.

I am a nature lover who lives and
teaches in beautiful, pastoral New England.
The War of the Animals books were inspired
by the 2020 pandemic lockdown. I remember driving by animals that freely roamed
the streets after we were in lockdown (I was getting groceries—not ignoring
state mandates—I promise!). I felt for the first time how much the animals were
in lockdown whenever we weren’t. That inspired the idea of a variety of animals
having voices and speaking up for the earth. I started writing the books
shortly thereafter.
I write
because I love doing so. I’ve been published by a small press and a few
literary journals. Before self-publishing the War of the Animals books, I wrote The Naked Earth, named 2008 Fiction Book of the Year by The Online Journal of News and Current
Affairs. I also received a Writer’s
Notes Magazine general fiction book award for my stories in Sing of the High Country.
