The three main characters in
the novel (and the love triangle!) are complicated, passionate, and each
struggling with a dangerous secret.
Alexandra Tashen (23) is all
Texan, of mixed Indian-Swedish ancestry, a prodigy academic, with dark hair,
golden skin, and startling light eyes. She is gregarious, a comic, mischievous,
empathetic; also restless, uncoordinated, absent-minded, unworldly, and
insatiably curious. After Alex learns the truth of her background, she
struggles to adapt to a life of hiding in the open, her innate merry,
affectionate personality in constant conflict with the distrust, limitations
and loneliness required to survive. Dream casting: Anya Chalotra (from
Witcher).
Eric Burton (29) is a
California red-headed physical giant and commanding CyberIntelligence Officer
with a lurking sense of humor, analytical, principled (with sex-driven blind
spots), taciturn, a fine artist with a long-fuse powder keg temper. Orphaned young,
he is emotionally dependent on Strav (his younger adoptive brother). Eric
assaulted another officer for reasons he refused to explain, and was
court-martialed. His drive to protect his family comes into painful conflict
with his personal and professional integrity. Dream casting: Alexander
Ludwig (from Vikings).
Strav Beki (27) is
Mongolian, Eurasian, a charismatic, polyglot diplomat who straddles the modern
world and traditional Khanate steppe. He is a daredevil athlete, optimistic and
resilient, stubborn, emotional, hyperarticulate and literary, religious, conservative,
morally flexible but grounded by his sworn-brother Eric. A brutally failed
hostage rescue a year earlier left Strav raging inside, guilty, ashamed,
reckless and destructive. He fears turning into a monster. Dream
casting: Charles Melton (from May-December).
About Sheri T. Joseph:
Sheri T. Joseph grew up in a New York beach town until her family relocated to San Francisco. She holds a bachelor’s degree from UC Berkeley and a JD from UC Law San Francisco. She is passionate about the need for housing and serves as executive director of a nonprofit corporation that supports creation of affordable housing for families, veterans, refugees, and vulnerable populations. She’s also a trustee for Homeward Bound, a provider of homeless services and housing. Sheri and her husband have three adventurous children and live in Tiburon, California. This is her first book.
