Kayden Moses has worked for 15 years to be a good pastor's son. He's volunteered at every Vacation Bible School, never missed a youth group meeting, and tries to follow the example of his spiritually gifted twin sister, Delilah. However, all his diligent efforts are disrupted when he meets the biggest stumbling block of his life: Alex. He's the new boy in youth group, bubbly and opinionated and dizzyingly nice to look at. Suddenly, Kayden finds himself caught in a spiral of confusion and asking questions he's never asked before. Who is Kayden Moses? Because he's certainly not a good pastor's son anymore.

If you want the full Crown of Blooms soundtrack, click this link and enjoy. However, here's the top 10 songs that tell the story of Crown of Blooms.

10. God Must Hate Me by Catie Turner

When you're raised being told that a conscious, omniscient God supposedly handcrafted you, it makes all of your flaws and shortcomings feel so cosmically confusing. There's this constant question that comes with every insecurity. ‘Why would a good God make me this way?’.  This song expresses a lot of how the main character, Kayden, feels about Alex, the new boy at church. To Kayden, Alex is so beautiful, so perfect, that it feels divine. It feels like what an encounter with God should feel like. But because Alex is, in many ways, everything that Kayden is not, with his adoration comes this angry confusion. ‘How can God create something so beautiful then turn around and make me?’

9. Strawberry Blonde by Mitski

This song captures the conflict of attraction and jealousy that can happen between black people and their white paramours, particularly when they're the same gender. There's that trope of “do I want to be you or be with you?” that I think sits at the heart of Kayden and Alex's relationship.

8. Iris by The Goo Goo Dolls

On top of being one of the best songs ever written, Iris reflects that while Kayden desperately wants to be seen, to be understood, to be known, he's also terrified of what it might reveal, what it might change. The horrifying ordeal of being known and all that. And it also captures the intense trust it takes to finally let someone in, let someone see the real, ugly, dangerous truth of you.

7. Breakaway by George Ezra

There's this ruinous melancholy to this song that captures what it's like to walk through life seemingly normal while suffering your own private burden. This is the song that describes the relationship between Kayden and his twin sister Delilah, the way they both suffer in silence but find solace in each other.

6. Inner White Girl from A Strange Loop

This is one of the most potent expressions of what it is to be a queer black boy, to crave self definition while being bound by the body you're in. If you really want to engage with black masculinity and queerness, Strange Loop is a must listen/watch.

5. Love Me, Normally by Will Wood

It was hard to limit myself to one Will Wood song. The title almost says it all. It also has this escalating, manic, rageful tone that also really expresses how the pressure of performing normalcy builds up.

4. Arsonist's Lullabye by Hozier

Kayden’s biggest struggle throughout this book and the next two is coming to terms with the fact that the passion and desire inside of him can't be quelled or controlled. Think of this song as sort of a reflection on the futility of trying to fight that fire.

3. I Hear A Symphony by Cody Fry

Kayden isn't just raised as a conservative Christian. He's also very sheltered and raised around other sheltered kids. There's so much about the world that he doesn't know. So when Alex comes into his life with this worldly, Renaissance man perspective, for Kayden it's like seeing in color for the first time. The simple song of his childhood suddenly becomes an overwhelming symphony.

2. It Will Come Back by Hozier

I'm sure I am not the only queer person who experienced a feeling of resentment toward the people you're attracted to, especially those who make it impossible not to love them. For Kayden, that push and pull, that feeling of losing control because of the emotions someone else pulls out of you, it's a matter of his immortal soul. I think this song really captures how dire that plea of ‘stop being so good to me’ really is.

  1. The Village by Wrabel

I included this song because I think it's a defining song of a generation. It's a protest anthem of sorts. The saying goes “a child who is not embraced by the village will burn it down to feel its warmth”. We see the village that Kayden is growing up in and, without spoiling anything, in the next two books we will see what it means to burn that village down.

Blog Tour- GO HOME by #TerryParish & #LochanSharma With The Book Playlist & A #Giveaway! @GroundwoodBooks

I am thrilled to be hosting a spot on the GO HOME by Terry Farish & Lochan Sharma Blog Tour hosted by Rockstar Book Tours. Check out my post and make sure to enter the giveaway!

Author: Terry Farish & Lochan Sharma

In a world beset by anger and fear, what does it mean to protect one’s home and family?

Olive and Gabe ― her older brother’s best friend ― are deeply in love. They want nothing more than to make a home and family together, especially after the overdose death of Olive’s brother, Chris. It won’t be easy. Gabe works three jobs, and Olive still needs to finish high school, but their future together feels certain and right.

But when Samir Paudel moves into the house across the street, Olive's and Gabe’s lives are disrupted. The Paudel house is overfull with family and friends, and they play loud music at all hours. Yet Olive is drawn to them, particularly to Samir’s little nephew, Bhim, and his grandfather, Hajurba.

Yet Samir’s very presence seems to awaken in Gabe an intense anger ― toward immigrants he believes are taking resources from White Americans ― resources that would have saved Chris and his own father, who has lost his job and is now struggling with ill health and alcoholism.

When Olive realizes that Gabe and his family are the source of escalating aggressions toward the Paudels, she no longer recognizes the loyal, loving boy she fell in love with.

GO HOME Playlist

Hello Readers,

Here’s a short play list for GO HOME. Lochan Sharma and I co-wrote GO HOME.  As we were writing the character Samir who is the Nepal-born boy and Olive, the U.S-born girl, a lot of songs were natural to tell their experience and emotions.

Lochan writes:  Samir enjoyed “Timi Sangai” by Apurva Tamang.  It is a beautiful song about wanting to experience life with another person. The title translates to “with you” in English. While the intent of the song is more romantic, the sentiments expressed are similar to the feelings of Samir and Heera, his sister. https://youtu.be/Qaj2TceZGGU?si=iD5pepbLoYFLh1xe

“For Aisha” by MEMBA & EVAN GIIA (ft. Nooran Sisters) is a song from the movie “The Sky Is Pink”. The song was written by the brother of Aisha Chaudhary, a girl who passed away from pulmonary fibrosis at the early age of 18. The song was written to capture the memory of Aisha. It includes the three languages that she would use with her family and evokes happy and sad emotions just like life around Aisha. She was an uplifting person but the nature of her disease would remind everyone that she had a very limited time. This song would be very emotional for Samir, who loves his sister and would be distraught if he was in the same situation. https://youtu.be/_1ab7lWDQmA?si=rXR1g9caxgMegIWD

Terry writes: There’s a song that captured the tenderness and the idea of finding a home with each other for Gabe and Olive in GO HOME. It’s "This Is How You Fall in Love" by Jeremy Zucker and Chelsea Cutler. Their voices are beautiful together. Chelsea Cutler sings ‘You’ll be my best friend until we grow old.”  It’s definitely both their song in the opening of the book and may remain their song but with the sharp pain of their troubles.

Another song important to Gabe and his sister Simone and the story is “Soldiers” by Adrian Patrick performed by Otherwise.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p733z6aKwMA

GO HOME is about friendship, hard won, the friendships all the characters have or they miss, or want to have. Here’s a song of about friendship I found as I wrote.  It’s “Saathi” by Yama Buddha.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H-ExNmHo2xI#ddg-play It’s sung in Nepali.  Here are the lyrics in English: https://genius.com/Genius-english-translations-yama-buddha-saathi-english-translation-lyrics

The best bookstores are haunted.

My name is Hecate Grimm, and I own a bookshop. It’s pretty average as far as bookstores go. Nothing special to see here, or at least that’s what my regulars believe. They also think I’m a ventriloquist, special effects guru, and dedicated actress.

Clearly, when it was raining brains, the vast majority went out with umbrellas. I’ve told them, time and time again that I’m a witch, and this is a haunted bookstore, which is why it’s called The Haunt.

But no, it’s much easier to believe I wasted time learning to throw my voice and hanging invisible wires all over the place. After all, you’re modern people. How could anything supernatural be going on right under your noses?

Maiden, Mother, and Crone—the stupidity of it makes me sick. I guess you can come in if you must. Look around and actually buy something since you’ve had the audacity to interrupt my book. Just don’t wear out your welcome or waste my time with your idiotic questions. I have fictional characters to get back to, and they’re all more interesting than you.

Book Trailer:

Top 5 favorite Video Games.

  1. Crash Team Racing. This was my jam growing up, and I still love it today, especially if I need a quick chill-out moment.
  2. Civilization. I have played all of them, and I continue to love them. I’m such a weenie, though. Now that I can turn off the barbarians, I totally do, and I try very hard to win without any sort of war. I can hang with the snide remarks so long as they stay in their lane, lol.
  3. Baldur’s Gate 3. I have played through it twice and romanced all the characters (I am that person, and I’m not sorry). It’s such a fun game, and I love playing it with my husband and friends.
  4. Skyrim. I find something new every time I play this through. I freaking love it.
  5. Sims 3. It was the best Sims, and we all know it.

About SamiJo McQuiston:

SamiJo is a first-class shenanigator, decorated coddiwompler, narrator, creator, and author of The Abney Kelly series and The Haunt (coming October 8th). She also has a short story, One Samhain Night, published in the UJ Plainsong literary journal in April 2024, and a poem, The Bottom, coming out in collaboration with other North Dakota authors in late 2024. She lives in North Dakota with her husband (Andy), dogs (Puck, Enzo, and Bailey), and three cats (Horus, Anubis, and Snow Kitty). In her spare time, she reads, writes, listens to audiobooks, plays video games, and enjoys D&D on the weekends.

On a more serious note, writing is everything to SamiJo. As a sickly child, she often spent her time indoors or at the hospital before they figured out she had asthma. At that time, books were her best friends. Without fairy tales, the Dear America Books, and authors like Diana Wynne Jones, Jim Sukach, Anne Martin, and Richard Peck, she would have been unthinkably lonely. She aims to write stories that give people a much-needed escape from reality and create places to go when getting out the front door is too much to bear.
