In a world beset by anger and fear, what does it mean to protect one’s home and family?

Olive and Gabe ― her older brother’s best friend ― are deeply in love. They want nothing more than to make a home and family together, especially after the overdose death of Olive’s brother, Chris. It won’t be easy. Gabe works three jobs, and Olive still needs to finish high school, but their future together feels certain and right.

But when Samir Paudel moves into the house across the street, Olive's and Gabe’s lives are disrupted. The Paudel house is overfull with family and friends, and they play loud music at all hours. Yet Olive is drawn to them, particularly to Samir’s little nephew, Bhim, and his grandfather, Hajurba.

Yet Samir’s very presence seems to awaken in Gabe an intense anger ― toward immigrants he believes are taking resources from White Americans ― resources that would have saved Chris and his own father, who has lost his job and is now struggling with ill health and alcoholism.

When Olive realizes that Gabe and his family are the source of escalating aggressions toward the Paudels, she no longer recognizes the loyal, loving boy she fell in love with.

GO HOME Playlist

Hello Readers,

Here’s a short play list for GO HOME. Lochan Sharma and I co-wrote GO HOME.  As we were writing the character Samir who is the Nepal-born boy and Olive, the U.S-born girl, a lot of songs were natural to tell their experience and emotions.

Lochan writes:  Samir enjoyed “Timi Sangai” by Apurva Tamang.  It is a beautiful song about wanting to experience life with another person. The title translates to “with you” in English. While the intent of the song is more romantic, the sentiments expressed are similar to the feelings of Samir and Heera, his sister. https://youtu.be/Qaj2TceZGGU?si=iD5pepbLoYFLh1xe

“For Aisha” by MEMBA & EVAN GIIA (ft. Nooran Sisters) is a song from the movie “The Sky Is Pink”. The song was written by the brother of Aisha Chaudhary, a girl who passed away from pulmonary fibrosis at the early age of 18. The song was written to capture the memory of Aisha. It includes the three languages that she would use with her family and evokes happy and sad emotions just like life around Aisha. She was an uplifting person but the nature of her disease would remind everyone that she had a very limited time. This song would be very emotional for Samir, who loves his sister and would be distraught if he was in the same situation. https://youtu.be/_1ab7lWDQmA?si=rXR1g9caxgMegIWD

Terry writes: There’s a song that captured the tenderness and the idea of finding a home with each other for Gabe and Olive in GO HOME. It’s "This Is How You Fall in Love" by Jeremy Zucker and Chelsea Cutler. Their voices are beautiful together. Chelsea Cutler sings ‘You’ll be my best friend until we grow old.”  It’s definitely both their song in the opening of the book and may remain their song but with the sharp pain of their troubles.

Another song important to Gabe and his sister Simone and the story is “Soldiers” by Adrian Patrick performed by Otherwise.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p733z6aKwMA

GO HOME is about friendship, hard won, the friendships all the characters have or they miss, or want to have. Here’s a song of about friendship I found as I wrote.  It’s “Saathi” by Yama Buddha.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H-ExNmHo2xI#ddg-play It’s sung in Nepali.  Here are the lyrics in English: https://genius.com/Genius-english-translations-yama-buddha-saathi-english-translation-lyrics
